Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1917.
Application filed March 22, 1916. Serial No. 85,922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HANNAH J. K. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have-invented new and useful Improvements in Pillows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in pillow construction.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a pillow which will embody a cylindrical wall and end walls for the cylindrical wall formed centrally with axial openings, a coiled spring being arranged longitudinally of the pillow and having the ends thereof secured to the end walls in order to hold the end walls'properly spaced apart, cup springs radiating from the coiled spring and being connected to the cylindrical side wall of the pillow to hold such wall against collapsing and at the same time enable the wall to yield when the illow is subjected to pressure, thereby enabling the pillow to be used with comfort and case. By means of the openings in the end walls of the pillow and the open springs, air may circulate through the pillow, thereby keeping the latter thoroughly ventilated.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pillow constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through the same. Fig. e is an enlarged fragmentary diagrammatic View showing the arrangement of the springs.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates the circular wall of the pillow, such wall embodying inner and outer layers of fabric or cloth 2 and 3 and a pad arranged betweenthe inner and outer fabric 2 and 8. The ends of the wall thus formed are turned in and the cloth and pad secured to one another and to a c rcular securing band 5 by means of rivets 6 or other suitable ings are formed. Arranged longitudinally of the pillow at the center thereof is a coiled spring 7 having the end convolutions secured to the respective securing bands 5. Secured to the remaining convolutions of the spring 7 and radiating therefrom are coneshaped coiled springs 8. The springs 8 on each convolution of the spring 7 are spaced apart equal distances and the small ends of such springs 8 are fastened to the spring 7 while connected to the large ends of the springs 8 are cone-shaped coiled springs 9 respectively. The small ends of the springs 9 are connected to the large ends of the springs 8 and connected to the large end of each spring 9 at diametrically opposite points are outwardly projecting cone-shaped coiled springs 10 that have the outer or relatively large ends thereof secured to the inner cloth or fabric 2. Owing to the arrangement of the springs 7, 8, 9 and 10, it will be seen that the interior of the pillow will be thoroughly ventilated at all times, while the cylindrical wall of the pillow will be held against collapsing and at the same time permitted to yield when the pillow is in use. Surrounding the pillow is a slip 11 formed of some suitable material and the ends of the slip are turned in and equipped with a draw string whereby the slip may be tightened around the pillow. If desired, a lace fabric 13 or the like may be connected to each end of the slip so as to ornament the pillow.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim: volutions of said coiled spring" and connect- 10 A pillow comprising a circular Wall haved to said circular Wall.
