MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 23, I909. Serial No. 514,104.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, AUSTIN T. QUICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following isa'specification.
This invention is an improvement in mattresses and particularly in means for ventilating the interior of the'mattress by permitting the circulation of fresh air through the mattress; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed. I
In the draWingFigure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a portion ofa mat tress embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View drawn longitudinally through the ventilating tube. Fig. 3 is an elevation from the/outer side of the ventilator. Fig.
4: is a detail perspective View of a portion of the ventilator tube, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of a button for application to the outer end of the ventilating tube.
The mattress has an-inner spring portion A, a surrounding stuffed portion B, which may be stuffed With raw cotton, felt, or other suitable material, and an inner casing C of burlap or the like forming a lining for the stufi'ed portion B, and a cover forthe spring portion A.
Theventilating tube D is open at its inner end at D and extends through the stufiied portion B of the mattress, opening at its inner end in the spring portion and held at its outer end to the cover B of the stuffed portion B by the construction presently described. As shown, the tube D has its outer end reinforced by the returned portion D which is preferably turned back along the outer side of the body of the tube, and immediately, adjacent to this bead or returned portion D I provide the tube D with a circumferential series of openings D to receive alternately from their inner and outer sides spurs E and E on the cap ring E, which is shown as an annulus provided with a groove or channel E to receive the outer end of the tube D, and with the spurs E and E on respectively, the inner and outer sides of the said channel E and adapt ed to be bent through the openings D when the parts are applied as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, alternately in the outer and inner sides of the said openings D in securing the Patented Mar. as, rare tube D to the mattress cover B as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
In the use of the invention an opening of suitable size is formed in the mattress cover B, and the tube D inserted through the stuffed portion B and the spring cover C and the ring E with a gauze center F is applied over the mattress cover B surrounding the opening formed therein, and the spurs are passed through the saidcover B and the gauze and bent within the openings D as before described, thus securing the tube in place and furnishing a neat finish at the outer side of the mattress.
The construction is simple, canbe cheaply AUSTIN TUNIS omen.-
