MATTRESS.
Specicati'on of Letters Patent.
' Patented July 21, 190s.
Application led October 31, 1907.' Serial No. 400,062.
To all whom it may concern.' v
Be it known that I, FREDRICK HOFFMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention 1s an improved form c of mattress, the object being to lrovide a matiiat the filling thereof will not become thin or compressed at certain points and thick or bulging at other points, and another object is to provide a mattress of such construction that access to the interior thereof can be quickly and easily had.
My invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this speciiic'ationz-Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the mattress. Fig. 2 is a lonitudinal sectional view of Vthe mattress.
ig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail ers ective view of the clamp. Fig. 5 is a etai sectional view illustrating the o eration of the clamp.
Reierring to the drawings A ticking or casing, which is constructed substantially the same 'as usual except that at one end the ticking is divided longitudinally as shown at A', and the edges are turned aroundand sewed over wire rods B, and the slit in the side of the ticking is closed by indicates the means of a series of spring metal clips C, which is adapted to en age the beaded edges of said strip as most 1, 3 and 5. The tick ing or casing A is ivided longitudmally into a series of comc early shown in F1 s.'
parltments, by means of a series of fabric partitions D and each compartment is separately filled or stuffed with stuffing E which may be of hair, cotton or any other suitable material.
By having the mattress open at one en'd, it is obvious that if the mattress becomes packed at any particular point, the stuffing 1n one or more of the com artments may be quickly and easily remove loosened up and replaced, thereby restoring the mattress to itsl original and proper for It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap, simple and efficient construction of mattress which can be uickly and easily renovated whenever desireil.
Havin thus fully described my invention, what I c aim as Letters Patent is z* A mattress opened at one end, and having the meeting edges of saidv opened side stiffened by means of wire rods, s ring clips for en aging the said edges for t e purpose of ho ding them together, the casing bein@` divided into a series of compartments and the stuffing in the said compartments all arranged substantially as described.
FREDRICK HOFFMANN.
