UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. KELLY AND FRANK L. RANKIN, OF GREENSBURG, INDIANA.
PNEUMATIC PAD FOR HARNESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
Application filed April 25, 1907. Serial No. 370,282.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES M. KELLY and FRANK L. RANKIN, citizens of the United States, residents of Greensburg, in the county of Decatur and State of Indiana, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Pneumatic Pads for Harness; and we declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing the invention as applied to a harness saddle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ad designed to be used with a harness reast strap. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pad with protective covering in section and showing a tube having three parallel folds. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a tube having two parallel folds. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55, Fig. 4, on a larger scale. Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the pad as applied to a harness breast strap.
The invention has relation to pneumatic harness pads, having for its object the provision of a simple and durable pad of elastic nature, which will yield readily to the movements of the horse, and which will have air spaces between the cushions thereof to facili tate the evaporation of sweat.
With this object in view, the invention consists in the'novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a designates a protective inclosing covering of leather or cloth, inside of which is located the pneumatic tubing 7), of the same size in cross section throughout its length, usually formed of soft rubber, with closed ends, 0, and which has a bend or bends formed therein, at (1, giving a plurality of parallel folds or reverting branches 6. These folds e are held in relative position lying close together throughout their length by means of the protective covering, which lies close to the folds of the tubing and has stitched connection at f, between the folds.
The pad is provided with an inflating nipple g, extending through the inclosing covering, and having a suitable valve.
The attachment straps h, are secured to the covering (1. These pads are designed to be made for adjustment under the harness collar, under the saddle, the breast strap, and wherever they are needed. The tubular coils of rubber tube within the pad covering are designed, not only to provide an excellent cushion, but also because of their ribbed efiect on the inner surface to facilitate ventilation under the pad, thereby preventing sweating.
The protective covering for the pneumatic tube lies close to the branches of such tube entirely around the same, providing a longitudinal space i, between the covered branches, such space leading outward to the atmosphere at one end of the branches at j,
whereby the sweat vapors may readily esca e.
I Iaving thus described the invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A flexible pneumatic pad for harness, comprising a flexible tubing of the same size in cross-section throughout its length, having closed ends and a plurality of parallel reverting branches arranged close together throughout their length, and an inclosing flexible protective covering having close contact with said branches entirely around the same and having connection between the branches, said pad having a longitudinal space between the covered tubing branches opening outward at one end of the branches, and attachment straps secured to said covering.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M. KELLY. FRANK L. RANKIN. Witnesses:
MARSH THOMAS, J. L. BIDDINGER.
