To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .InssE A. Losnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corry, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in monkey wrenches, and particularly to quick acting wrenches.
The invention comprises the production of a wrench having what is usually termed a movable member and a stationery member and means for moving the stationary member.
The invention further comprises the production of means for adjusting the movable member and a spring and pawl and ratchet for regulating the position of the stationary member.
The object in view is the production of a wrench in which rapid adjustment or manipulation of the jaws may be made.
Another object in view is the production of a wrench provided with a spring and pawl and ratchet for regulating the position of the stationary member in combination with a screw and knurled nut for adjusting the movable member.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing the figure represents a side elevation of a monkey wrench embodying the features of the present invention, the handle being shown in section to better disclose the mechanism contained therein.
In the manufacture of wrenches it has been found desirable to make the same in such a way as to have the jaws easily and quickly opened and closed and, if possible to be opened and closed and properly adjusted by the use of one hand. The present invention is designed to accomplish these advantages, and particularly the quick adjustment of the jaws by the use of one hand of the operator.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates what may be termed the stationary member, and 2 the movable member. The movable member is made in the usual or any desired construction and is provided with a screw threaded bolt 3 and knurled nut 4, as is commonly in use on monkey wrenches. The stationary member 1 is provided with a shank or tang 5 that passes entirely through and extends beyond the handle 6 of the wrench. Surrounding the reduced part 7 of the tang is a spring 7 that is adaptedv to engage the shouldered portion of the tang 5 at 8, and the end 9 of the handle 6. The end 9 is adapted to engage the spring 7, and is also adapted to form a bearing for the outer end of the tang 5 to reciprocate in. Secured to the outer end of the tang 5.in any desired way is a stop or nut 10 for limiting the outward movement of the member 1. Part of the shank or tang 5 is provided with a ratchet which is engaged by a suitable pawl 12 pivotally mounted at 13 in the handle (5. A suitable spring 14 is adapted to normally hold the pawl 12 in engagement with the ratchet 11.
In operation when it is desired to rapidly open the jaws of the wrench wider than the bolt 3 will permit, the pawl 12 is pressed by the thumb of the operator and consequently the member 1 is released, which in turn will be rapidly forced outward by the spring 7. In case the spring 7 forces the member 1 too great a distance outward, all that will be necessary to decrease the distance between the jaws of the members 1 and 2 will be to place the end of the wrench against any solid substance, as for instance, the nut, and press the same until the member 1 has been retracted a sufficient distance. The wrench may then be applied to the nut and if the adjustment is not as accurate as might be desired, the screw 3' is revolved by the nut 4 until the proper adjustment is secured. It will thus be seen that by operating the pawl 12 the distance between the jaws may be increased to any desired distance, and then a final adjustment given by the use of the screw 3. These operations, as will be evident, may be performed by one hand of the operator which will leave the other hand disengaged for holding the nut or any other matter desired.
It is to be observed that the tang 5 passes entirely through the handle 6 and is loosely mounted therein, and has a bearing at 15 and at 16, and is limited in its movement by the end 9 and lug 10.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A wrench comprising a movable jaw, means for adjusting the position of the same, a normally stationary jaw formed with a shank passing through the handle of the wrench and extending beyond the same, a spring positioned in the handle of the wrench for moving said sta' tionary jaw when same is released, means for holding said stationary jaw in any position desired, and a lug se cured to the end of said shank for limiting the movement olsaid normally stationary member.
A wrench comprising a movable member, means for adjusting the same, a normally stationary member coacting therewith having its shank passing loosely through the handle of said wrench and projecting beyond the same, means secured on the end of said shank for limiting the outward movement of said normally stationary member, a spring for normally forcing the jawof said normally stationary member away from said handle, and a pawl and rack for regulating the outward movement of said normally stationary member.
