Description

, PATENTBD APR. 14 0. E. HAWK'INS.
WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED MAY 17, 1007- A'fformg/s barra sfrarne aw FFC.
VHARLES E. HAWKINS, OF BRADDOGK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALFRED T. THOMPSON, Ul BRA DDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
To all w71 om 'it lmay concern:
Be it known that l, (JnAnLns E. HAwnrNs, a citizen ol'v the United States of America, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State oi' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, .reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches of that type commonly styled monkey wrenches.
The invention has for its object to provide a-strong and durable wrench that can be easily and quickly adjusted. p
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive wrench wherein novel means is employed iior quickly ad` justing the movable awof the wrench or minutely adjustlng the saine, whereby the movable aw can be quickly placed 1n engage- I ment with an object arid then further adjusted. to take a positive grip u )on the object.
With. the above and other o jects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in theiappended claims. f
Referring to the drawing forming art of this specification, like numerals of relerence designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
`Figure 1 is an elevation of, a Wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the wrench partly in elevation, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a wrenchFig. 4 is an elevation of a worm used in connection with the wrench.
To put i-ny invention into ractice, l construct xny im roved wrench o a shank 1 hav.- ing a tcothec edge 2. The shank carries a fixed i aw 3 and a conventional lorrn of handle 4. i
Upon the shank 1 is located a movable jaw 5 having straps and 7 surrounding the shank. The `iaw 5, at its lower end. adjacent to the strap 7 is provided with n recess S, for a revoluble worm 9, said worin meshing with the toothed edge 2 of the shank 1. The worin retained within the recess 8 by a verticaliy disposed pin .1() held within the jaw 5 by a screw 11.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led May 17, 1907.
Patented April 14, 190s.
Serial No. 374,232.
The strap 7 is larger than the strap 6 pro; viding clearance l2 for the shank 1. clearance of the strap 7 is fixed a spring or resilient strip of metal 14, which is secured to the strip by rivets 15.A The spring 14 is provided with a. curved end 16 bearing against the rear or plain edge of the shank 1, said spring normally holding the toothed edge 2 of theshank 1 in engagement with the worm 9 of the movable jaw. The inner sides of the strap 6 are beveled, as at 17, while the jaw 'is beveled at 18 said jaw and strap being beveled to permit of a wabbling or rocking movement of the movable jaw 5 upon the'shank 1, when being adjusted.
To quickly adjust the movable jaw 5 it is only necessary to press inwardly upon the In the strap 7 to disenga e the worm 9 from the toothed edge 2- of t e shank 1, and thenthe jaw 5 can be moved to any desired osition upon the shank of the wrench. Wlien the strap '7 is released, the spring 14.immcdiately moves the jaw 5 whereby the worm 9 will engage the toothed edge 2 of the shank .1 and hold the movable j aw 5 in a lixed position 'with relation to said shank.
To minutely adjust the jaw 5, it is only necessary to rotate theworm 9, and the jaw 5 will be slowly fed infeither direction upon the shank 1.
My invention particularly resides in the simplicity of construction, and the positive means which I have employed for quickly and minutely adjusting t e movable jaw of the wrench. v
The wrench is' constructed of strong and durable metal, ca able of withstandn rou h usage to Whidh it is subjected.
hat ll claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2W A wrench comprising a shankhaving a toothed portion and fixed j awcarried by one end of the shank, ahandle fixed to theop 'osite end of the shank, a movable jaw s idably-mounted upon said shank, said mov-- able jaw at its upper end formed with a laterally-extendingstrasurroundin and. projecting from the shan said stra avfin'g its inner end beveled, said movab e jaw' provided at its lower end with a recess in the forward face thereof, and further having a laterally-extending strap adapted to surround said shank, said lower strap of greater length than said upper strap and so that the inner face of the lower strap will extend in a plane in which extendslthe oter face of the a spring having its lower end upper strap,
y to the lnner face of the lower fixed rigid strap, said spring having its lower edge'ilush Withthe lower edge of the lower strap and said spring having its upper end bowed and the remaining portion straight, said spring .ol a length as tof terminate atfa point remo/.vable jaw and extending across the rel l cess, a worm journaled upon said pin engag- 1 ing the toothed edge of the shank, and means extending in ttlie lower portion of the movable jaw and through said pin for detachably connecting it in position.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
