W/TNESSES l A TTOHNEYS APPLICATION FILED JAN..30, V190'7.
.2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
W24/maaar@ Arron/v5 ys v In the operation of' my improved engine the pipe.18 is in communication with the carburetor, orhother s suitable source of explosive mixture, and the pipeV 28 communicates with the outside atmosphere or with the and the gas in the cylinder below the piston would be' I forced through theport 6 and past the valve 8 inw the space 5V within the piston. At the end of the outward stroke the exhaust port 28 will be uncovered and the f main portion of the exhaust gas would rush out from the explosion chamber. As'the piston starts on the inward stroke, due to the action of the ily-wheel, the
' Avalve 8 vcloses'to prevent the escape of the compressed away with. v
gas from thelspace within the piston, the valve l9`opens to admit more of -the explosive charge to the space below the piston, andthe wrist-pin 13 is brought to the .position shown in Fig. 3, whereby the explosion chamber may stillcommunicate with the outside atmosphere through the'piston rod and wrist-pin. As the port 7 of the piston'passcs the port 23 oi the plate :20, a highlycompressed charge `within th'e piston ru'shes out into the passage 22 and into the explosion-chamber above the .pist/bn. By this'time the further turning ofv the Wrist-pin 13 closes the outlet through the piston rod and rush of-gasv past the igniter 25,` causes-'thc sudden in'temperature thereof and results in the ignition and explosion f the charge, whereupon the above series ofsteps is repeated.
The plate 20 having the port 23 'is freely movable the wall of the cylinder and may bc adjusted to any desired position. The position occupied bythe plate `20 determines the time at which th'c explosive chargewill' enter the explosion chamber and thus indirectly determines the time at which Vthe explosion will take place. By enlarging or reducing the size-of `the'portZB, the amount of the explosive charge which it is desired to admit to the cylinder, may be readily controlled. Thus, the plate 20, in controlling both the'amount or-tlieexplosive charge and the time at which it is adriitted, serves as a spoed regulator, obviating the necessity of tl); employment oi on y other regulator of any kind. By plm-i ug the explosion chamber in communication with the-'outside atmosphere for a` brief period after the main exhaust port has been closed, the last traces 0i the exhaust gas may be permitted to escape. The time at which the vpassage through the piston rod will be opened au'd closed may be readily controlled by means of the adjustment of the wrist-pin 13 within the connecting rod 14, which adjustment may be-readily secured by means of set screws or in any other lsuitable manner.
By controlling the time of thevadmission of the explosive charge, no electricity is needed and the complicated sparkcr usuallyl employed is entirely done The catalytic agent, preferably platinum, is -always ready for use and-never needs any attention or repairing of any kind. 'llli'c only valves in the entire engine are the'two check valves controlling the inlet to the cylinder and the vinlet to the hollow piston, andl as these are very simple in their operation, it is evident at thee is very little liability of any of the parts of ne engine vgetting out of order or requiring attention.-
senese I venging of the-cylinder is much more complete than inanytwocycleengine heretofore lgnown, by reason f o f the double exhaust means and the baille plate 24, adjacent the inlet end of thev passage 22.
Having thus described my invention I and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
claim as new,
