Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. PATSCHKE, SARAH A. PATSCHKE, and WILLIAM H. BOYER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Folding Screen-Door, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to doors for buildings, and its object is to provide a new and improved folding screen door, made in sections capable of folding to permit convenient handling and storing of the door during the winter months.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a front elevation of the improvement in an extended position; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 is a like view of the same in a folded position; Fig. f is an enlarged sectional plan view of the improvement, on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is an en larged transverse section of the same, on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.

As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the door is formed of a plurality of sections or panels A, A and A located one above the other and connected with each other by hinges B, B and B, B, of which the hinges B, B connect the sections A and A with each other on one face of the door, while the hinges B, B are located on the opposite face of the door and connect the sections A and A with each other. By arranging the hinges in the manner described, the sections or panels A, A and -A can be readily folded one upon the other, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3.

In order to hold the sections or panels in an extended position, stays O, O and O, C are provided, of which the stays C, O are located directly opposite the hinges B, B, and the stays C, C are located directly opposite the hinges B, B; that is, the stays G, C are on the same face of the door containing the hinges B, B, while the stays O, G are on the same face of the door containing the hinges B, B.

The oppositely-disposed hinges and stays are con nected with each other and to the sections or panels in the following manner, special reference being had to Fig. 5: One leaf B of each hinge B or B is connected by bolts D with the corresponding portion of the stays O or C, and the other leaf B of each hinge is connected by screws E to the corresponding section or panel A,

A or A and the said leaf B is also connected by a bolt F with the corresponding portion of the stay 0 or C. Now, when the leaves B and B of each hinge are connected with the corresponding stay 0 or C in the manner described and shown in the drawings, then the sections A, A and A- of the door are securely held in an extended position; but when it is desired to fold the sections or panels to take up comparatively little room, as indicated in Fig. 3, then it is only necessary to remove the bolts F to disconnect the leaves B of the hinges from the stays C, C, to allow the sections or panels forming the door to swing into a folded position. In a like manner, when it is desired to rextend the sections, it is only necessary to swing the sections into an extended position and replace the bolts F, to hold the sections in the extended position.

As indicated in Fig. 4, each of the stays C, C is preferably provided, at its sides, with inwardly-extending angular flanges C C, to engage the material of the door sections, with a view to securely hold the stays against sidewise movement. As indicated in Figs. 1 and f, a portion of each flange C' may extend between the joint of the fastening strip G and the adjacent shoulder of the side of the section, it being understood that the fastening strip G serves to hold the wire netting H securely in place in the usual manner.

From the foregoing it will be seen that when the door is to be taken down for storing during the winter season, it can readily be folded to permit of conveniently carrying-the door to an attic or other place in which the door'is to be stored, and the folded door takes-up comparatively little room.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

A folding screen door comprising three sections arranged one above the other, pairs of strap hinges connecting the adjacent sections, the hinges being arranged on the vertical members of the door with the hinges of one pair on one side of the door and the hinges of the other pair on the opposite side of said door, flanged stays arranged on the sections of the door opposite the hinges, one of the flanges of the stays engaging the wall of the rabbet of the door, bolts for permanently securing each stay and a leaf of hinge to one section of the door, screws for per-ma nently securing the other leaf of the hinge to the adjacent section, and a removable belt for securing one end of each stay to a section. said bolt passing through one leaf of a hinge. the door and the stay.
