DRAFT-PLATE FOR FIBEPROOF DOORS 0R SHUTTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1916.
Application filed June 9, 1915. Serial No. 33,149.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, FELIX L. SAINO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, Shelby county, and State of Tennessee, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Plates for Fireproof Doors or Shutters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to fire-proof doors and shutters and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claim.
The invention has for its 'purpose to provide a draft plate for mounting on the door or shutter and located within the corner formed by the adjacent surfaces of the door, or shutter, and the frame, and overlies the hinged edge thereof to the end of preventing the creation of a draft therethrough with its, resultant disadvantages.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a draft plate constructed of one piece, or in a plurality of sections, adapted to be adjustably mounted on any fire-proof door or shutter in accordance with the re quirement of the particular size of frame along the hinged edge or at the top or bottom as desired; and one which will in no manner detract from the other advantages of these structures.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a door or shutter illustrating the application of the invention, Fig. 2 a detail perspective view of the draft plate, Fig. 3 shows its application on a modified form of shutter, and Fig. A shows the draft plate located at the bottom edge of the door or shutter.
- Referring to the construction in detail, and wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the different views, 1 and 3 designate respectively the front and rear walls of a fire-proof door or shutter that are constructed preferably of corrugated sheet metal, and 2 is an intermediate sheet of refractory substance, such as asbestos or the like. Said walls and the asbestos sheet of the shutter or door comprise a single unit that is contained within and reinforced by a suitable frame, as fully 'setforth in my co-pending application for United States patent, bearing Serial Number 32,94 8, and dated June 8, 1915.
The hlnged side of the door or shutter is constructed with a boxing deformed contlnuous with the wall 1 and having a tongue 5 infolded within the lapped edge 6 of the strip 7 that is secured between said front and rear walls 1 and 3 in any approved manner. The door or shutter is mounted on the wall 1 by a special type of hinge forming the subject matter of a separate application for Unlted States patent, bearing the Serial Number 30,611, and dated May 26, 1915.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the edge of the boxing 4 is turned inwardly, formlng a tongue 5 that fits within the channel 6 of the lapped portion 7, and said member 7 is disposed at substantially rlght angles to and is formed continuous with the strip 7.
The draft plate per 86 consists of a single str p or a plurality of metal sections or strips 9 of angle cross-section and having a plurality of slots 10 formed in one flange thereof to receive the fastening devices for mounting the same immediately against the frame wall A and the shutter strip 7. Said fastening devices consist of a series of screws or bolts 11 passing through said slots of the plate 7 and secured by nuts 12, or in any other manner. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4:, the draft plate is applied along the side edge and also along the bottom, and it will be understood that the top edge may, in like manner, be fitted with a draft plate.
It will be evident from the foregoing that the draft plate completely overlies the hinged edge of the door or shutter, or the upper or lower edge thereof, and efiectively closes the crack or opening therethrough which, otherwise left free, would tend to produce a considerable draft conducive to the spreading or intensity of the flame; and it will be further noted that the draft plate may be readily applied to any fire-proof door or shutter without altering its structure.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, and therefore I do not Wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claim.
Having thus fully described my said invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination With a hingedly mounted fire-proof door or shutter constructed with an integrally formed boxing along the hinged edge thereof, said boxing comprising a sheet metal plane strip disposed against the outer surface of the door or Window opening and projecting across the door or Window opening Within the plane of said surface for an appreciable distance, of a draft plate comprising a plurality of sheet metal strips of angle cross section having slots formed therein, and bolts fitting through said slots and adjustably securing said strips to the inner surface of said boxing strip portion, said draft plate adapted to fit closely Within the corner provided by said boxing strip and the adjacent Wall surface of the door or Window opening and thereby overlie and efiectively close the space between said Wall and the door or shutter against the passage of air drafts, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Memphis, Tennessee, this 19th day of May, A. D. nineteen hundred and fifteen.
