To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ar/ran Baum-1n, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barry, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented a new and use'tul Gate, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to gates, such as farm gates and the like.

It is the object of the present invention to provide novel and improved means for bracing and hanging a gate constructed of spaced rails or slats, in order that the gate will be substantial or rigid and in order that the means for hanging the gate will not be affected by the breaking, injury or sagging of the rails or slats.

The present invention also contemplates a gate of the character indicated which shall not only be simple and substantial in construction, but which shall also be comparatively inexpensive and which shall permit the gate to be hung in its median plane and not to one side or the other of the median plane or plane of the rails.

To the above and other ends, the present invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention,

The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters have been employed to denote correspomling parts, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevation oi a gate, partly broken away, constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail taken on the line of Fig. 1, 011 an enlarged scale.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the gate embodies in its essentials a plurality of spaced rails or slats 3, which are suitably arranged with respect to each other in order to suit the circumstances, and which may be constructed of any suitable material, preterably wood, and in various dimensions. These rails are secured together by duplicate stiles or uprights 4 arranged at intervals along the rails, and on the opposite ttiaccs thereof, the said stiles being constructed ot' angle iron and bolts or other securing members 5 connecting the duplicate stiles, and passing through the rails so as to clamp the rails securely between the stiles,

Duplicate pairs of diagonal braces (3 are arranged on opposite faces of the rails, one of the ends of the braces (i overlapping the ends of the respective stiles at the hinged end of the rails, and the other ends of the respective braces, being overlapped. These braces (3 are constructed of angle iron and the duplicate braces are connected by bolts or other securing members .3 which also pass through the rails to clamp the rails between the braces. Bolts 7 are engaged through the overlapped ends of the stiles and braces so as to provide rigid and substantial hanger frames at the hingcdend oi the gate between which the corresponding cnds of the rails are engaged. Each of the hanger frames as thus provided is triangular, the two -frames being duplicates and each side of each :lrame being constructed of angle iron having one llangc resting against the rails and the said llangcs of the respective sides oi? each frame projecting inwardly relative to the frame.

The triangular hanger Frames are adapted to be suspended from a suitable post by means ot a pair ol, hangers 8 tilting between the stiles l at the hinged end of the gate, adjacent their ends, and between the respeetive braces t3, securing memlwrs ll) being passed through the said stiles and braces and through the hangers in order to clamp the hangers between the pairs of stiles and braces. Each of the hangers 8 comprises a strap of metal doubled to form an eye 9, the ends of the straps being secured between the respective stiles and braces. The upper and lower hangers R abut against the lower and upper edges oi the upper and lower rails, respectively, and the said hangers also serve to brace ianger 'lran'ies, by bracing the upper and lower corners thereof. Thus, the hanger -lrames, are braced by the hangers S, the hangers also serving to support the hanger frames in an effective. manner.

The hangers 8 are adapted to be engaged to the post by means of a pair of lag screws or other members ll engaged into the postand having their outer ends upturned to provide pintles 19 over which the eyes ol, the hangers 3 are adapted to engage. Thus, the gate may be pivoted in its median plane to the post so as to swing with equal ease to either side. it will also be noted that each rail is independently supported by the hanger frames, and that the rigidity of the hanger frames is not affected by the breaking or injury of any rail. It will be noted that the rails are carried by the hanger frames and that the hanger frames are hinged to the post, so that the rails themselves are not hinged to the post and are relieved of this duty. It will therefore follow that the objects aimed at have been carried out in a satisfactory manner, and that the present gate will provide a desirable one for the purposes for which it is designed. Other advantages and capabilities of the present invention will be apparent to those versed in the art and need not be itemized at length.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is z- A gate embodying spaced rails, duplicate triangular hanger frames on the opposite faces of the rails at the hinged end of the gate each side of each frame being constructed of angle iron having one flange rest-ing against the rails the said flanges of the respective sides of each frame projecting inwardly relative to the frame and being overlapped at their ends, one side of each frame forming a stile running along the hinged end of the gate, a pair of hangers projecting between certain of the lower and upper rails and fitting between the stiles and the other respective sides of the frames, and securing members connecting the said flanges of the respective duplicate sides of the frames to secure the sides of the respective frames together and to secure the rails and the hangers between the frames.
