Description

#tutti @gettin JOHN RYER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 86,323, dated .Tanna/ry 26, 1869.
IMPROVED VAULT-CO'VER.
To all whom 'it cancel/nf Be it known that I, J oHN RYER, of. Brooklyn, in theoounty of Kings, and State of New York, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Vault-Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification wherein- Figure 1 is a plan ofthe metal frame for the vaultoover;
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same at the line x x, showing the metal Ventilating-cover set within said frame; and
Figure 3 is a similar view, with the closed or Wooden cap or'eover introduced in said frame.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts,
Vault-"covers, heretofore made, have generally been made either of an open or of a closed form, and not oapable of change. At some seasons of the year an open vault-cover is required for ventilation, and at other times the cover should be closed, to exclude the Weather.
The nature of my said invention consists of a vaultcover, formed Withva flanged ring and frame, Yto set into the stone and receive the movable Ventilating-cap, formed of perforated iron, or a movable wooden cap, to close entirely the cover at thoseseasons of the year when it is desirable to exclude rain, snow, or dampness.
In the drawinga is a hanged ring, to set within the stone-Work-opening to the vault.
b b are cross-bars, to which the eye c is attached, for receiving the chain that attaches the frame and ring into its place.
d is the hollow movable metal cap,.formed to set within the ring a, and having Ventilating-openings, it, and knobs, o o, to prevent slipping upon the vault-cover.
This cap d may be removed to allow sunlight to penetrate the vault, and the frame a b will be a security against burglars.
rIhe cap-block e, iig. 3, when introduced into the metal frame a b, eectually closes the vault-cover against the action of the elements, and a packing of fibrous or other material may be pressed in around the said block e, between that and the ri'm a, to make the parts Water-tight.
The block e, when made of wood, is much better asa surface for walking on in the winterseason, than metal, because it does not become as slippery as metal.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl is- The vault-cover, formed with the rim a, and crossbars b, in combination with the removable Ventilatingoover d, the Han ged ring beingV also adapted to the closed block e, as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof', I have hereunto set my signature, this 1st day of April, 1868. Y
JOHN RYER.
