ALBERT L. ANDREIVS, OF FREDONIA, NEIV YORK.
WINDOW FOR UMBRELLAS AND PARASOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,352, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed August 26, 1889. Serial No. 321,978. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
. Be it known that I, ALBERT L. ANDREWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fredonia, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows for Umbrellas and Parasols; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in umbrellas and parasols; and it consists in providing the same with a lookout or window of a novel construction and arrangement, whereby a person may readily see ahead without raising the umbrella or the like. At the same time it is so constructed that no water is permitted to penetrate the same where the device is applied, all as will be hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of an um brella, showing my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section View of the device, showing it attached to part of an umbrella. Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the plates, showing the fastening-spurs; and Fig. 4. is a similar view of the opposite plate, showing the slots therein.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates an umbrella or article of like construction, which is made in the well-known manner, and through which is cut an opening a, for a purpose hereinafter explained.
B B represent concavo-convex plates, which have an inner opening I) 19, forming a rim. The plate 13 is provided with spurs c c, which are cut or stamped from the metal, and the plate B is provided with slots (1 cl, which are arranged directly opposite to the spurs aforesaid.
0 represents a concavo-convex glass, which is interposed between the plates and serves as the window-pane.
It will be seen that in applying my device to the cloth of an umbrella the plate B is placed on the under side of the cloth, between which and said plate the glass is interposed, after which the plate B is placed on the outside of said cloth, and the spurs are forced through the same and through the slots on the plate B, after which said spurs are bent upon said plate, thus binding one. plate to the other and holding firmly between them the glass or other transparent material, and what cloth is clamped between the two plates serves as an excellent packing to keep out the rain, and the plates being constructed in concavo-oonvex form, there is a sufficient slant on the outside and around the opening or window to direct the water therefrom. I usually employ a common watch-crystal, which is interposed between plates; but mica or other transparent material suitable for the same can be used. A device as here described and shown is simple in construction and durable.
I am aware that prior to my invention umbrellas and the like have been provided with windows; hence I do not claim such a device, broadly; but, H
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with an umbrella or the like having an opening through it, as described, of the concavo-convex plates B B, the former provided with the spurs c and the latter with the slots d, adapted to engage one another, and the concavo-convex glass 0, interposed between said plates, all'as shown and described. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT L. ANDREWS.
itnesses:
O. E. BARTRUM, F. W. HOWARD.
