AUGUSTUS E. POTTER, OF HALLOWELL, MAINE.
LAWN -SWING.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
Application filed June 5,1906'. Serial No. 320,364.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS E. POTTER, a resident of Hallowell, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Swings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lawn swings, the object of the invention being to provide improved mounting for the body supports or seats, which permits them to be supported at any angle or inclination and also permits them to be readily removed and replaced and held in position without the employment of any bolts, nuts, etc., which are liable to work loose and be lost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view of the frame with body supports removed, and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are views of details of construction.
l., l, represent the pairs of standards of the supporting frame, connected at their upper ends by crossed braces 2. Each pair of standards l is connected at top and bottom, by cross bars or rods 3 and are provided near their upper ends, with cross rods 4, on which latter, the standards 5 of the swing frames are pivotally hung. The lower ends of these standards 5 are connected by cross rods 6, and a slatted platform 7 rests on these cross rods 6, and is made with parallel lugs S to receive the rods G and hold the standards 5 apart and in proper relative position to each other, and permit the occupants of the swing, by pressure on the platform, to operate the swing. i
The seat supporting bars 9 are pivotallyfsecured on rods 6 adjacent to the standards 5, and are provided with cross rods l0, one cross rod l0 being located at the upper outer ends of bars 9, and this upper rod 10, projects out beyond the bars 9 and pivotally secures the ends of pivoted bars ll. The lower ends of the pivoted bars ll are connected to the standards 5, by links 12, the latter serving as arm rests for the occupants of the body supports or swing seats 13.
The seats 13 may be of various forms, one form shown having the pivoted back 14, and another form comprisstandards 5, and the back 14 has trunnions 17 near its upper end to enter notches 17 in the bars 9. The hammock seat l5 is provided with cross rods 18 at its ends, to enter the notches I6"L and I7, and take the place of the ordinary swing seats, a pair of seats being furnished to the trade with each swing so that the purchaser can use either or both as preferred.
It will thus be seen that the body supports can be removed and changed without disturbing any other part of the swing and are held in position without the employment of bolts, nuts, or other part liable to become loose or lost.
The pivoted bars ll are provided with a series of alined notches 19 to receive a movable rod 20, and the latter serves to limit the pivotal movement of bars 9 and ll, and hence holds the body support at the desired angle of inclination, By placing the rod 20 in the lowest pair of notches, the greatest inclination is secured and each succeeding pair of notches above will, when the rod 20 is held therein, lessen the inclination, and the body supports can be disposed as best suits the occupants.
A great many slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence, I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth but considerl myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. In a swing, the combination with a support, of swinging standards hung` therein,- seat supporting bars pivot-ally connected with the standards, pivoted hars connected with the upper' ends of the seat supporting bars, links connecting the pivoted hars and standards, said pivoted hars having` a series of alined notches and a rod to he supported in any of the pairs of notches to limit the inclination olf the seat supporting hars.
In a swing, the combination with a fixed frame, of standards hung therein, seat supporting bars pivotally connected with the standards, adjustable means connecting the upper ends of the seat supporting hars and standards, and said hars and standards having notched portions, and a hody support having trunnions to enter said notched portions and hold the hody support in position.
In testiinon)v whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUSTUS E. IOTTER.
