Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. S. ROSE, OF BATH, NEW YORK.
SOFA- BEDSTEAD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,188, dated March 13, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, H. S. ROSE, of Bath, in the` county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa and Lounge Bedsteads; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, iu which- Figure l is a transverse section, showing the lounge extended to form a bedstead. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view, representing the lounge in a closed position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists in the employment, in addition to the main or ordinary frame or body of a sofa or lounge, of a supplemental frame sliding transversely within the body and supported at its forward edge by suitable legs iu such a way that it may be easily and conveniently drawn outward to extend the sofa or lounge to the size ot' a bedstead or pushed inward to reduce it to the size of a common sofa. or lounge, the bottom of the main frame, as well as tha-t ot' the said supplemental frame, being composed of slats so arranged that the slats of one frame lit snugly and slide between those of the other frame, thus forming a strong and simple means of connecting the supplemental to the main trame.
lo enable those skilled in the art to understand the nature and construction ot my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents the main frame or body of the lounge, and B the supplemental frame. The body A consists of the ordinary horizontal rectangular frame It, supported upon four legs,
',one at each corner, and furnished with a back, c, and also at each end with au arm, m.
Extending across the frame h, at suitable distances apart, are a number of flat horizontal bars or slats, b, which are secured at each end to the front and rear sides, respectively, ofthe said frame.
The supplemental frame B is formed of similar slats d, being also situated ina position transverse to the frame A and placed alternately with the slats b thereof', so that when the supplemental frame B is pushed inward Within the body A the slats d will slide back between the slats I), as clearly shown iu Fig. 2. The front ends of the slats d are secured to the longitudinal bar t', which is sustained by two or more legs, It, and their rearmost ends are iirmly fastened upon another longitudinal bar, u, which is situated below the slats b, and is sustained, while sliding' underneath the same, by one or more transverse bars, mf, secured to the under side otA the frame n.
By pushing the supplemental sliding frame B inward, so that its slats d will lie between the slats b ot' the frame lz, the lounge or sofa is made to assume the shape and proportions Ot' one ot' the ordinary kind, as shown in Fig. 2, while by pulling the said supplemental frame B outward, so that its rearmost longitudinal bar, n, will be immediately behind the front side of the frame h, the sofa is extended, as represented in Fig. l and also indicated by red lines in Fig. 2, to the size of a bedstead, and may be used as such.
l/Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The sliding' supplemental frame B, having its bottom composed of slats d, secured at their rearmost ends to the longitudinal bar a, supported by the transverse bar m', the said slats d working between the slats b, which form the bottom ofthe main frame or body ot' the sofa or lounge, all substantially as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
