Description

A J. J. BRAZNELL FOLDING BED Filed Augfg. 1924 INVEN TGR .LBRAZNELL d TTORNEY Patented Nov. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,551,05o PATENT orifice.
JOHN J. BRAZNEIL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIG-NOR TO AMERICAN BED COMPANY, OF S'I. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
FOLDING BED.
Application filed August 9, 1924.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOI-IN J. BRAZNELn, a citizen of the United States o f America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Folding Bed, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
My invention relates toa folding bed and particularly to that type of folding bed known as sofa beds or day beds.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, rigid and strong folding b ed of the type named, to secure ease of manipulation and to provide ample storage space for the bedding when the device is in its folded position.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate so much of one formof folding bed as is necessary to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is an end elevation; Figure 2 is a top plan view of one end; andv Figure 3 is an enlarged cross section showing the device in folded position.
In order to simplify the drawings I have omitted the ornamental end pieces usually applied to beds of this type as well as `the permanent textile covering for the spring fabric, necessary to enable the device to function as a sofa or couch, and also several braces which are not essential to the operation of the device.
Each of the end frames comprise a pair of uprights 5, preferably of angle iron, and upper and lower cross bars 6 and 7 respectively. The two end frames are connected by an angle bar 8 extending between the upper ends of one pair of uprights, and angle bar 9 extending between the lower ends of the other pair, and by a fiat bar 10 secured to the lower cross bar 7 at points intermediate their ends. Extending between the bars 8 and 10 are a number of metal straps 11, preferably curved at one end, as shown, and forming one part of the bottom of the receptacle for the bedding, the other part being formed, when the device is in folded position, by a section of the spring frame as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figures 1 and 2, preferably provided with Serial No. 731,174.
casters 13, support one edge of the spring frame which comprises three sections 14, 15 and 16 carrying the spring fabric 17 which may be of any suitable type. The section 14 is pivoted to the section 15 at the point 1S, and the section 15 to the section 16 at the point 19. Connecting the central section 15 to the end frames are a pair of links 20 and 21 situated at each end of the bed, the links 20 being pivot-ed to the cross bar 7 and the links 21 to the cross bar 6. Section 16 is also connected to the end frames by links 22 pivoted to the cross bar 6 adjacent to the links21. The angle irons composing the section 14 are connected by a strut preferably formed of tubing and bowed to prevent contact with the fabric 17. A similar strut 24 connects the angle iron of the section 15 while those of the section 16 may be connected by an angular strut 25 arranged at the ends. Each of the links 21 is provided with an extension to which is attached one end of a helical spring 26, the 1(ther end of which is attached to the angle l/Vhen the device is to be used as a bed the spring frame is extended as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the double link connection to the central section, together with the end link 22 and the rigid legs 12 forming a firm support. To fold the device into couch or sofa form the section 14 and legs 12 are forced toward the end frames until the parts assume the position shown in Figure 3, the center section forming the front of the couch and the section 16 being reversed and brought into alignment with the straps 11 to cooperate with said straps in forming the bottom of the receptacle for the bedding. The closing movement is assisted by the spring 26 which thus overcomes the ditliculty which would otherwise be experienced in moving the parts into closed position. Ample space for the bedding is secured between the bottom, formed of the straps 11 and the section 16, and the top formed of the section 14 and access to this space is readily obtained by raising the section 14 on the hinges 18.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pair of end frames, of a spring frame comprising three sections, the
2 outer sectionV being provided at its VOtite-r side with supporting legs and pivoted' at its inner side to the intermediate section,
the inner section being pvot-ally'conneeted to the end traine and to the intermediate section, whereby it is reversed when 1n folded position, and 'apair of links at. each.,Y end connectingthe intermediate section tot the end freine, said links bein-fg so propo-r1 tioned and positioned as to hold the intermediate section in horizontal position when the inner section -being piveted to the intere Y mediate section and Connected bya 'lin-k t0 the end` frame, a lin-k conneeting the 'inner side oft thee-intermediate section tothe end named link, and a tlrirdrlink conneeting the` outer side` of the intermediate seetion to the end traine, said third link'being lon-ger than said second named link.
3, In a device of' the class described, the
combination with a pair of end frames, of a spring frame eomprisilng three sections, the on-ter seotion being provided at its outer side with supportinglegs and pivotedat its inner side to the intermediate section, the in-y ner section being pvoted to the intermediate see-tien and connected by a link to the end frame, a link connecting the inner side of the interi'nediiate sect-ion to the end frame, said link being longer than the iirst named link, said second namedlink being provided VWith anefx'tensi'on toV Whiehis attachedA a spring to Vassist in' fold-ingk the bed, and. a third link connecting the outer side ,ofv the intermedi-ate section to the end frame, saidy third link being longer. than said second named link.V i Y Y Ina device othe el'ass described, the combinationwith apair-of end' trames,Y Off' a partial receptacle bottoni carriledl between said ranacs, and ai seetional? spring raine having link een-neetiion toA said end frames,
p ione section' oiifysaild Vslnfilng fraine Whenin f laine, said link hei-ng longer than the first 'felded position aligning withv saidf partial receptacle botten tofcoinp-lete the saine.
En testimony whereof, E have heneunto set rv hand thi-s-'theth day of August,
isi-2e t JQHN J1 BRAZNELL.
