Description

te @Kb heb gaat esta i S. ULLMANN, OF NORFOLK, VIRGI'NIYA.
Letters Patent No. 86,260,
dated Janna/ry 26, 18.69.
IMPROVEZMIENT IN TRUNKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all Iwhom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, S. ULLMANN, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful improvement in Trunks; and I Vdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had, to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents'a transverse sectional elevation of a trunk having my improvement, and
Figure 2 represents an edge view of one of the m`etallic strips.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in trunks, and has for its object to perfect the construction of the jointed metallic straps which are now in use for the purpose of holding the lid in an open position. ,p
it consists in providing the metallic Istrap with a rule-joint, whereby many important advantages are gained, the lnost important of which is that the pivot of the joint is brought, when the lid is open, below'a straight line drawn from the two points of connection of the strap with the trunk-body and lid, whereby the pressure of the lid forward serves to strengthen the joint and prevent the possibility-,of the li'd closing.
I am aware that pins have been used for this purpose, inserted in the sides of the strap, but by their use projections are formed, upon which articles of clothing are constantly catching; and if these articles are thin, as light silks and lace, they are liable -to be torn, and thereby destroyed. If, however, the articles of clothing are of lirmer stuffs, the joint is liable to be pulled outward, in removing them from the trunk, and the lid closed. This result would be attended with` great inconvenience, particularly in those trunks that are provided with a spring-lock, because, when once land oted to the body of the trunk, at a, and to thecover,`
at l), and provided with a rule-joint, at D. The pivot of the joint D being below the right line, between the pivots a and l), any tendency of the cover to fall down forward will spring the strips downward, thereby preventing them from doubling at the said joint, as they must necessarily do before the `cover can fail.
In this respect my improved braces are much superior to the straps commonly used, and they are also much more reliable in preventing the cover from falling backward, as they are susceptible of being much more rmly secured to the parts, and. arethereby less liable to break or become disconnected.
When it is desired to close the trunk, the joints D must be raised until the pivot rises above the said right line between the pivots a and l, When the weight of th'e cover will cause them to double up, and they will assume the position shown in. red when the trunk is closed.
Having thus 'described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, the metallic trunkstraps C, when provided with the rule-j oint, D, without projecting pins, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
`Si. ULLMANN. Witnesses:
DAVIDSON MORRIS, A. J. GooDRIoH.
