J. BANFORD. POISON BOTTLE. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 26.1906.

JAMES BANFORD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
POISON-B OTTLE Application filed September 26, 1906. erial No. 336.312.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BANFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Poison-Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to poison bottles, being especially directed to an alarm device therefor and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive alarm which may be readily installed for use, and one which will unfailingly operate to advertise the nature of the bottle when the latter is manipulated for discharging its contents.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown a vertical longitudinal section centrally through a bottle equipped with an alarm embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bottle composed of glass and of usual form having a neck 2 and a bottom 3, the latter being inwardly concaved to present an underlying chamber 4 in which is centered a bell 5 of the form shown having downwardly convergent walls terminating in a restricted mouth and detachably secured in place by means of a removable fastening member or screw 6 threaded into a central portion or enlargement 7 formed integral with the bottom between which and the upper end of the bell there is arranged a metal spacing member or washer 8.
Hung at the center of the alarm member or bell 5 and preferably from the fastening screw 6 by means of a flexible element or chain 9 is a metal striking member or clapper 10 adapted to normally hang by gravity in a perpendicular position and to swing freely into Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
contact with the bell for sounding the latter when the bottle is moved.
In practice, when the bottle is manipulated for pouring its contents the element 9 will yield for permitting the clapper to move freely in any direction into contact with the bell 5 thereby striking and sounding the latter to give due warning of the nature of the bottle and prevent unadvised or accidental use of its contents. It is to be noted that under the construction described the alarm mechanism may be conveniently removed when desired forthe purpose of employing the bottle for holding harmless preparations. It is also .to be observed that owing to the bell being of the peculiar shape shown it will, when sounded, give off a peculiar tone distinct from that emanating from bells of the ordinary form, and further that because of the bell mouth being restricted the clapper will, under slight movement of the bottle, contact With and ring the bell.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
Abottle provided with a dome-shaped bottom extending upwardly therein and forming a correspondingly shaped chamber, said domeshaped bottom being provided at its crown portion with a screw threaded socket, a bell arranged within said chamber, a screw having its head in clamping engagement with the top of the bell and its shanks screw threaded into said socket, a Washer or spacing member disposed between the crown portions of the bell and dome, a flexible member suspended within the bell from the head of the screw, and a clapper carried by said flexible member and adapted to strike against the sides of the bell when the bottle is tilted.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES BANFOR/D.
