Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK WILLIAMS THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Coney Island, borough of Brooklyn, in the ,county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Amusement Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention has reference to improvements in amusement devices of the character for which Letters Patent No. 830,853 were granted to me September 11, 1906.

The object of the present invention is to provide a construction involving a plurality of downwardly-inclined slide-ways discharging into a common slide-way, the slide-ways being preferably contiguous except at a point intermediate their length, where they diverge and again converge before passing to the common slideway.

The invention also resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement which will be fully set forth hereafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of an amusement device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, partly in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross section substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

More specifically stated, the amusement device or apparatus comprises a'tower or other suitable structure 1 through which, as by suitable stairways, an elevated platform 2 may be reached, the latter receiving the upper end of a double downwardly-inclined slide-way, consisting of contiguous slide-ways 3 and 4 passing through an opening 5 in one side of the structure 1. The slide-ways 3 and 4 are laterally sinuous and of trough-shaped construction, having linings of parallel strips or reeds 6 whereby a lasting slipperiness and smoothness is attained the same as in my prior patent referred to. These linings 6 are preferably supported on cradles 7 carried by benches 8 or other structural supports arranged at convenient points throughout the length of the slideways.

The slide-ways, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, are contiguous throughout their length except at an intermediate point, where they converge and thereafter diverge until again in contact, passing from this point some distance before discharging into a common slide-way 9, the latter being substantially equal in width to the combined width of the slide-ways 3 and 4 and having a substantially right angular bend at its lower end to check the speed of the slider at this point, and discharge the same at one side of the slide-way at a terminal 10, said terminal being arranged in such position as to be obstructed from view from the entrance point of the slide-ways 3 and 4.

As will be observed from Fig. 1, the inclination of the slide-ways is irregular, being preferably made steeper at points preparatory to entering and leaving the convergent and divergent portions, also at the point of discharge into the common slide-way 9. The slide-ways 3 and 4 have the bottoms thereof near the point where they converge together, provided with abrupt bumps 11, both sides of each bump being arranged below a horizontal plane tangential to its crest or top and obviously operating to give one sliding over this point an impulsive lift and fall, affording pleasure and excitement without danger of injury.

It is apparent that various changes in the construction ,of my improved amusement device may be resorted to from that herein shown and described, without departing from the nature of the invention as defined in the claims annexed.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. An amusement device, comprising a plurality of downwardly-inclined, contiguous slide-ways having an intermediate divergent and convergent portion.

2. A11 amusement device, comprising a plurality of sinuous, trough-shaped, downward]y-inclined, contiguous slide-ways having an intermediate, divergent and convergent portion.

3. An amusement device, comprising a plurality of downwardly-inclined slide-ways, and a common slide-way into which said slideways discharge.

4. An amusement device, comprising a plurality of downwardlyinclined, sinuous, contiguous slideways having an intermediate, divergent and convergent portion, and a common slide-way into which said slideways discharge.

An amusement device, comprising a plurality of downwardly-inclined, contiguous slide-ways having an intermediate divergent and convergent portion, said convergent portions of the slide-ways having abrupt bumps formed in the bottoms thereof, each side of each of said bumps being located below a horizontal plane tangential to its top.

6. An amusement device, comprising a plurality of downwardly-inclined, sinuous slide-ways arranged in con tiguity except at an intermediate point where said slideways diverge and thereafter converge, and a common slideway into which said slide-ways discharge, said common slide-way having substantially a right-angular bend.
