Description

. @met f aia-w esta A. C. sHo'RTE AND H.' B. TODD, CFPLYMOUTH, CONNECTICUT. Letters Patent No. 86,039, dated Janna/ry 19;` 14869.
IMPROVEMENT IN MILK-CANS.
To all whom it man; concern Be it known that we, A. C. SHORTE and H. B. TODD, of Plymouth, in the county of Litchfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Milk-Gans; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of ourimproved can, with a part broken away, and
Figure 2 represents a plan view of the inside of the Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in milkcans; and
It consists of a spring-locking device for securing the cover-,as will be hereinafter described.
A represents the canhaving an internal cylinder', as shown at B, to provide a space, O, which we propose to fill with pounded charcoal, or other similar substance, to prevent the heat of the atmosphere penetrating-to the milk, which is designed to be put in at a low tem'- perature.
The .cover is provided With spring-hooks a., so arranged, asto hook under the shoulder of the can, at l), when extended to secure it to the can.
D represents a cover for the tube f.
To actuate the springs, the cover is provided with a cross-bar, d, which supports a vertical shaft, e, in a tube, f, projecting downward from the top of the cover, and
opening through the cover at the top, to admit a wrench for turning the said shaft.
The lower end of the sha, above the cross-bar, is provided with arms g, projecting horizontally ou'opposite sides, and connected by toggle-joints h to the springhooks c. l 4
The tendency of the spring-hooks is to the inward or unhooked position, as represented in iig; 2; and to hook the cover to the can, the shaft must be turned by tho key in the direction to straighten out the togglejoints, which will press the springs outward; and in order to cause the hooks to remain in the locked condition, it is necessary to carry the toggle-joints a little beyond the straight line, as shown in red, when the in ward pressure ofthe springs Will bear the arms g against the pins liv '6, and they will thereby be maintained in the locked position, until turned back again beyond the raf dial lin'e by the key, whenthey will spring inward far enough -to release thecovers.
Having thus described our invention,
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv The combination, with the spring-hooks a secured to the cover B, of the shaft e connected lto them by togglejoints, and provided with the stop-pins i Ii, substantially as and for the purpose described.
A. C. SHORTE. H. B. TODD. Witnesses N. G. WARNER, Hon-ACE FENN.
