' HANDLE ATTACHMENT FOR DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1915.
Application filed April 3, 1915. Serial No. 18,944.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, PAUL OHoRvATH, a subject of the King of Hungary, and J osnrrr CHORVA'lI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle Attachments for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to handle attachments for doors, more particularly furnace doors and has means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, capable of being detachably connected With the door handle for the purpose of swinging open a door and to overcome the employment of cloth, gloves, or other means used to prevent injury to a person when opening or closing a furnace or other door.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a handle attachment which is simple in its construction and arrangement strong, durable, etlicient, readily attached and detached to and from the door handle, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a handle attachment,
in accordance with this invention, showing the adaptation thereof in connection with a furnace door handle, the door being broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a furnace door and which has formed integral therewith a yoke-shape handle comprising a squared handle bar 2 and a pair of arms 3, these latter projecting from the bar 2 and merging into the door 1.
The handle attachment comprises an ovalfor its object to provide shape grip 4:, which has projecting therefrom a shank 5, the latter merges into a channel-shaped coupling member 6, which conforms in contour to the bar 2. The coupling member 6 is adapted to receive the handle bar 2, in a manner as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 and said coupling member 6 provides a socket 7 in which the bar 2 is mounted. The shank 5 is formed with a longitudinally extending chamber 8 which is interposed between the coupling member 6 and the grip 1 and seated in said chamber 8 is a coil compression spring 9.
Associated with the coupling member 6, is a retaining member 10, and which in connection with the member 6 detachably secures the handle, attachment with the handle bar 2. The retaining member 10 is in the form of a flat plate and when in operative position is mounted upon the top of the coupling member 6 and overlaps the top of the handle bar 2 and under such con" ditions the door handle is connected with the attachment. The retaining member is normally maintained in position upon the top of the coupling member through the medium of the spring 9, the latter bears against the lug 11 which extends into the chamber 8 and is formed integral with the lower face of the slide arm 12, the former merges into the retaining member 10 and is maintained upon the shank 5 by a pair of offset straps 13. The arm 12 extends into the chamber 8 and shank 5 and also the grip 4 has a groove 14 for the arm 12. The arm 12 has a handle member 15 to facilitate the shifting thereof. The straps 13 are secured in position by the hold fast devices 16.
By pulling the arm 12 rearwardly the handle bar 2 can be released from the coupling member 6 and when said arm 12 is released, the action of the spring 9 will shift said arm forward, under such conditions positioning the retaining member 10 upon the top of the coupling member 6.
at we claim is A handle attachment comprising a coupling member, a chambered shank formed integral therewith, a grip carried by the shank, a spring controlled retaining member normally positioned upon the top of the coupling member for maintaining a handle bar Within said coupling member, an arm integral with said retaining member and provided .with .a Jug extending .into the chamber offssaid Shank, an extensible member arranged Within the chamber of the shank and bearing against said lug, and means fen sli-dably connecti-ng *the arm to the shank.
In testimony whereof owe affix our signatures 1n presence of two wltnesses.
