OGULISTS TESTING-FRAME.

Application filed May 25, 1915, Serial No. 30,260.
To (4% whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, C ARLES l VEIGEL, citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oculists Testing-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to testing or trial frames for use of oculists in fitting glasses. The object of my invention is to provide improved means for supporting the bow or temple on the head and ears without the necessity of extending the bow downwardly back of the ears, as usual in devices of this kind.
A further object is to provide a frame in which the head or car prongs are adjustable to readily adapt the device in testing the eyes of different persons.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 illustrates an outside view of an extension bow or temple embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same,
Fig. 3 is an outside view illustrating a modified construction,
Fig. a is a top view of the same,
Fig. 5 is an inside view of the slide on which the ear prongs are mounted,
F ig. 6 illustrates the slide removed from the bow.
In the drawing, 2 represents one section of a bow, having a hinge member at 3 for connection to the testing frame, and A is the other member of the bow, having its end lapping by the end of the bow section 2 and secured thereto by suitable clips 5 having clamping screws 6. This portion of the device is now in general use and I make no claim to it herein.
The outer end of the bow section 4 has a downwardly turned portion 7 terminating in a head 8 having a button or disk 9 of cork or similar material thereon and an oppositely arranged prong 10 is similarly equipped and cooperates with the prong 7 to straddle the top of the ear and hold the testing frame in place on the nose. The section 4 is also provided with arms 11 and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917.
Renewed January 28, 1916. Serial No. 74,857.
12 having disks tobear on the head, said arms being of spring material so that, when desired, pressure may be obtained to aid in holding the bows against accidental displacement.
The relative position of thes prongs and arms is indicated in Fig. 2, and obviously any desired adjustment may be obtained by bending them slightly, inwardly or outwardly, and by moving the sections of the bow back and forth upon one another, the proper adjustment of the spectacle frame may be obtained.
In Fig. 3 a modified construction is shown, which consists in providing a single bow or temple 13 having a slide 1% thereon provided with a spring tongue 15 to bear on the bow and hold the slide against accidental movement, said slide also having downwardly extending prongs 16 to straddle the ear and an inwardly projecting prong 17 to bear on the head. By moving this slide back and forth the oculist can readily adjust the prongs to fit the ear of the person whose eyes are being tested. These prongs may, of course, be equipped with the yielding disks 9 of suitable material, if preferred, and there may be two of the prongs or arms to bear on the head instead of one, as shown. The bows will be graduated, as indicated, for convenience of adjustment, and it will, of course, be understood that each bow is equipped in the same manner and that these bows willbe attached to the usual testing frame.
I prefer to provide a connection between the bow or temple 13 and the frame, (not shown) consisting of a plate 18 pivoted at 19 on the temple and having a curved slot 20 therein to receive a thumb screw 21 which extends through the slot and is tapped into the temple. By loosening this screw the plate 18 can be tilted up or down to adjust the temple or bow with respect to the frame.
I claim as my invention:
1. A testing frame bow having depending prongs adapted to straddle the top of the ear, for the purpose specified.
2. A testing frame bow having prongs to straddle the ear and a yielding arm to bear on the side of the head.
3. A testing frame bow and a slide mounted thereon, said slide having depending prongs to straddle the ear and bear on the prongs to straddle the ear.
5. Ah testing frame bow and ed thereon, said slide having depending prongs to straddlethe ear and mounted to" have aiyielding bearing on the side of the head.
6.- A testing frame boW and a slide: mounted thereon, said slide having a prong to rest upon the ear and depend in the rear thereof, said slide also having an arm to bear on the side of the head. V l
7. In combination, Wlth"t testing frame testing franie bon anda sliden'iount 5 ed thereon, said slide having depending" v dlingitheear. a slideinou'nthow, a platepi'voted thereon having a curved slot therein and provided With means for eonnection to the frame, a thumb screw fit ting in-said slot and tapped into said bow, and prongsmountedonsaid bow for strad- 8. A testing frame bow in combination .ivitha, plate pivoted thereon and having meansforconnection With the frame, said plate. being mounted to-swing onitspivot to change the angle of the bow with respect to the frame, means for locking said plate in its'adjusted positions, and prongs mounted onsaid bow for straddling the ear.
' in witness whereof, I have hereunto'set my hand this 14th 'day of May 1915.
. a 5 CHARLES l VEIGEL.
