Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1907.
Application filed Kpril 16, 1907. Serial No. 368,539.
To' all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Eva SLATER, a subject of Great Britain, residing at Leeds, in the county of York, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bibs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to bibs of the class comprising a front or body-part made of absorbent material, and
Usually the two parts are connected together either by placingthe waterproof part within a pocket which is made in the front or body-part, or by placing it at the back side of the front or body-part and attaching it to the same by means of buttons upon the front or body-part and corresponding button-holes made in the waterproof part. The pockets in the first case increase the labor and eizpense in making a bib, while in the second case the buttons are a source of trouble since they frequently become detached from the front or body-part in the process of washing and ironing the front or body-part, and have to be replaced. The making of the buttonholes also adds to the labor and cost of manufacture.
The object of my invention is to provide a bib of the class aforesaid having a waterproof backing removably attached to the absorbent front or body-part by devices which/shall be free from the disadvantages that are incident ,to making the front or body-part with a pocket, and from those which result in case of the use of buttons applied to the part which is washed, and button-holes made in the waterproof backing.
The invention consists in a bib comprising a front or body-part and a waterproof backing, and having the latter attached removably ho the former by means of straps composed of tape or the like, each of which is secured by stitches or otherwise to the back side of the body-part at separated points so'as to leave a middle portion of the strap which is not bound down, and projecting portions of the waterproof sheet or backing, which are tucked under the said straps, and are provided withlflanged engaging de ices which by engagement withthe straps prevent ccidental withdrawal of the tucking projections. The application of the straps to the back side of the front or body does away with the annoyance and inconvenience resulting from the use of buttons on such part, and the liability of the same to become accidentally detached. The presence of the straps or tapes does not interfere in the leastwith the work of ironing the front or body-part, because they simply press down fiat.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing, which latter shows a rear view of a bib embodying the invention.
Having reference to the drawing,-At l is shown the front or body-part which usually is made of several thicknesses, or padded, with a line of stitching around its margin, and its intermediate portions quilted. At 2 is the waterproof backing, composed of rubber-coated or Macintoshed cloth, oiled silk, or other wellknown material suitable for the purpose. At 3, 3, 3,
are straps with which the front or body-part of the bib is furnished as above mentioned, each of such straps being attached to the front or body-part. at separated points 31, 31, as indicated. The distance between the two ' points 31, 31, in the case of each strap is sufficient to admit the tucking portion of the waterproof backing. The said tucking portions are designated 4, 4, 4. They are constituted by prominent portions or points at the edges of the waterproof backing, adapted to he slipped under the intermediate portions of the tapes or straps. The flanged retainers by which accidental escape of the respective tucking portions from under their tapes or straps is prevented are constituted in the present instance by buttons 5, 5, 5, which are attached at their centers to the tips of the tucking portions. After the tucking portions have been pushed into place under the tapes or straps, the flanges of the buttons are caused to engage over the said tapes or straps, and thereby accidental withdrawal of the tucking portions is prevented.
It will be perceived that the tapes or straps constitute keepers for the tongue-like tucking portions of the waterproof backing, and that the buttons constitute flanged retainers by which the undesired withdrawal of the respective tongues from under the corresponding keepers is prevented.
I claim as my in'venti0n:
- 1. In a bib, in combination, the front and the backing, detachably secured together by strap-like keepers on one of the said parts and tongues on the other thereof which tuck under the said keepers and are provided with flangedretainers to prevent accidental withdrawal.
2. In a bib, in combination, the front furnished with the strap-like keepers, and the backing having the tongues which tuck under and through the said keepers and are furnished with the buttons engaging over the said keepers to prevent undesired withdrawal of the tongues.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
