. Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 25,1901. Serial No. 354,027.
Patented July 9, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. DOUDNA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a vault and has for its object the perfect protection of the casket placed therein, and is also especially adapted for the purpose of holding the weight of earth from bearing upon the top of the vault, and for forming an air space immediately above the top.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device showing the base, the vault removed from the base and the supplemental roof lifted from the vault. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the vault, Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the vault, base. and supplemental roof.
i In constructing this vault I employ a box or casing A which may be of any suitable material, as for example, wood or iron, or may be constructed of cement if desired. 4
I have shown a vault constructed of wood as this is the cheapest and lightest form of the device. The side and end walls of the bar A are of considerable thickness and have a V-shaped groove formed in their lower edges; said groove extending entirely around said box. Within this groove extends a metal lining A which is secured to sides and top of the box. I provide a flat base B, which has V-shaped shoulders B formed upon its under face which shoulders fit in the groove A. This base is provided with two longitu- 1 dinal'strips B upon its lower face,. said strips being arranged parallel to and adjacent the side-edges of the base and lift it above the ground. Adjacent each end of the base are formed openings B In practice the box A is lowered over an elevated platform E, upon which the casket rests. When the parts are assembled the box fits tightly upon the case, the shoulder bearing upon the metal lining A and sealing the vault.
In order to hold theweight of the earth from the top of the vault and also to provide an, air space immediately above the top, the supplemental roof D is placed in position the supporting strips D resting upon the top of the box. i i
As the box A is lifted above the ground at the bottom by the supports B it Will be obvious that an air space is formed both above and below the vault and ventilation into these spaces are provided through the opening B and the tube 0.
Screw-eyes F are secured in the top of the box A,
by means of which it is lowered over the base B, platform E and the casket.
To form the V-shaped groove A without weakening the sides of the box I thicken the lower edge by supplemental side-strips A Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
A device of the kind described comprising a downwardly open box, having its lower edges beveled, supplemental side' strips also beveled on their inner faces, the said beveled portions forming a V-shaped groove, a base and a V-shaped shoulder on the base cooperating with said grooves.
