Be it known that I, JOHN` Louis Noni.,l a citizen ofthe United States, residing at St. Jacob, in the' county of Madison and Statel 5 of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and .useful Improvements in GraveCopings; and I do declare4 the following to be a full,

' Iy improved coping or guardcomprises si 'eieces 1 and en d pieces 2. 'The pieces 1 an 2 are in the form ofconcrete slabs of any suitable Width. The end 2 forming the head and foot sections of the guard may if desired have `theirupper edges lformed vmore or less ornamental or may be arched Yor rounded on their upper edges `to conform to the curvature of the grave mound.v In the side bars 1 are embedded reinforcing `rods 3 in the ends of which are ,formed eyes 4. In the ends of the side pieces 1 are square sockets 5 in which the eyes on the ends of the rods 3 are disposed and 'in said ends of the side bars are also formed Avertical passages 6 which intersect the sockets 5 and also communicate or register withthe eyes 4 in the ends of the rods 3 as shown.` In the end pieces 2 are also embedded reinforcing rods 7 which terminate alt'their 'ends' in eyes 8 said eyes being disposed in square sockets 9 formed in said end'piecesand opening through lthe inne sides thereof as shown. In the end pieces are also formed vertical passages 10 which intersect the sockets 9 and also register with theeyes 8'in the ends of the rei forcing rods7. sockets 9 in the endp pieces -2`are arranged in such positions that when lsaid end pieces are engaged with the ends of the side pieces 1 the sockets in said end` and side pieces will register.

In order to securely fasten the end and side pieces together when assembled to form the coping, I provide connecting links 11 The the ends of which are engaged with the sockets 5 and 9 in the ends of the side and end` pieces when said ieces are rbrought together; The ends of t e links 11 when thus arranged will also aline with the eyes 4 and 8 on the ends of the reinforcinv rods 3 and 7 and with the passages G-an 10 in said `Vside and end pieces. When the links 11 are thus brought into position, locking pins 12 are inserted in the passages 6 and 10 and through the registering' eyes 4 and 8 in the reinforcing rods 3 and 7 thereby connecting the reinforcing rods of the side and end pieces and firmly securing said pieces together. After the connecting rods have thus been engaged with the reinforcing rods and links in the manner described the upper end of the passages and 10 are closed by 110 also preferably cement or other plastic material, thus preventing the removal of the/pins and separation of the side and end pieces of the coping.
