Specification of Letters Patent.

4Application liled October 27,1905. Serial No. 284,676.
, eine so constructed as to loverlap the river sis and l).
Vv*bank to prevent the stream from cuttingor eating away the same, and, further, to collect all silt, sand, Weeds, and all permeable substances that may be in the stream, thus in time ,forming a solid mass alongside the river-bank.
Referring t9 the accompanying drawing, formin g a part of thisspecification and wherein like characters-of reference denote similar parts throughout the drawing, the figure dis-v closes a perspective view of my continuous fascine, showing 4the manner in which it is secured to the river-bank and held in the stream.
In constructing one 'of m continuous fascines I use a pluralityfof willow poles or timbers l, spaced asuitable distance apart and provided with the wire covering or netting A, whichoverlaps at both ends of the poles or timbers 1, as shownA in the drawing at e This structure, it will be observed, forms a mat for the fascine proper, which will be -more fully hereinafter described. Suitably secured'to, these poles or timbers l and extending upward therefrom at a suitable angle are the shield 'members or poles 2, which are braced and strengthened by means of the cross-pieces 3; ,gSecured to the forward or front side f the 'polesor shield menibers is the wire covering or netting B, which forms the front side of the brush-compartment D.
It will be observed that the wire-netting A, formin the bottom, and the wire-netting B, which forms the front side of my fascine, forms a triangular compartment D on the top of the netting A and near the top thereof,
which compartment D isa'dapted to be filled with hay, straw, brush, willows, or any other permeable substances thatniay be gathered on the river-banks, which is adapted to eollect all silt, sand, and other solids-in the stream, thus in time forming a .solid mass which acts as a shield er wall to prevent the current from cutting or eating `away the river-bank proper.
It will be observed that my continuous fascine overlaps and lies alongside the riverbank, shown in the drawing, thus preventing any destruction of the same by high water er logs and in floating down the stream which has heretofore been the great trouble in riprapping construction. i
My continuous fascine is held and secured in place upon the river-bank by securing the voverlaixngingi; end 0, of the wire-nettin A by any suitable means to the stakes or pi ings 4, which are driven into the earth upon the bank, as shown, and the opposite end l) ofthe covering or netting A is held and weighed down by any suitable means, such as sandbags or the like 6, which are secured to the overlapping end b by means of the cables 5.
It is ofcourse understood that my continuous fascine may be made of any suitable Wire covering or netting and poles or timbers of any length and size.
Having thus shown what I consider the preferable way of carrying out my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
l. A continuous fascine, comprising a base or mat, a body or wall of permeable substance protected on its lower side by means of said base or mat and on its outer side by meansv of a wire covering, substantially as' shown and described.
2. A continuous fascine, comprisin a wire and willow base, or mat, an upright s iield or open wall suitably secured to said mat or base, permeable substances adapted to be placed between said shield or wall and wire mat. or base to collect silt, sand and other solids in the stream, substantially as shown and described.
3. A continuous fascine, comprising a base or mat composed of a plurality of poles or timbers provided with-a suitable wn'e cover- 10o ing, an upright shield or Wall extending from E In testimony whereof I aix my signature said baise or mat, a itriungulenlr comnartilnell in presence of two Witnesses.
