PATENT OEEICE.
FASCINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,288,
dated December 13, 1904.
Application filed May 23, 1904. Serial No. 209,399. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. KELLNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Platte, in the county ofLincoln and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Fas eine, of which the following is a specification.
The aim of my invention is to providea composite fascine constructed to embrace two distinct members or housings, the first housing being intended to be filled with a suitable load or weight and to be practically closed, while extending from this weight chamber or housing' is a skeleton or partiallyropen housing, which, in conjunction with similar housings, is adapted to form a honeycombed structure into which the sand, silt, and other solids within the stream will collect. In crossrsection my fascines are in the shape of a rightangled triangle, so that they may be conveniently packed one upon the other.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 2 a sectional View of one of my fascines, and in Fig. 1 a top View thereof.
In constructing one of my fascines I provide a plurality of triangular frames, comprising the members 1,2, andB. These frame members are strengthened by means of the crossbraces 5, and secured to these frame members are suitable boards or timbers A, 4', and 5', as is shown in Fig. 2, so as to form a three-sided housing. To this base-housing forming my base-fascine are secured the eyebolts l0, from which extend suitable shore-cables 11, fastened to a convenient piling l2, as is shown in Fig. 1. Extending from one face of this basefascine is a skeleton comprising theface-surface 14E, forming a continuation of the face 4, to form a shield against which and over which the water flows. This shield is supported by means of a triangular frame comprising the frame members 6, 7, and 8, strengthened by means of the cross-braces 9. The base-fascine surface A forms the bottom or second face-surface of my skeleton fascine, the two ends and the back being left entirely open. A
fascine so constructed is then partially filled With sand, earth, or stones sunk at the proper point, preferably at an angle to the iiow of the river, as is disclosed in Fig. l, and in such a manner that the open portion of the fascine comes to the rear, and then a plurality of other fascines are sunk adjacent this iirst fascine, and preferably to the rear of the same Where necessary, these additional fascines, however, not requiring an anchorage, as the first fascine offers a base and shield for the same. Now as the siltbearing stream flows over this fascine the solids will gradually find a lodgment within the skeleton fascine and filling up the same to form a compact mass, and where a plurality of these faseines are used mud-chambers are gradually formed, which form a solid mass, so that the stream there grows more and more shallow. By this means it will be noticed. I form a fascine comprising two chambers, the one being' adapted to receive the Weight or load and the other forming an open compartment, as is shown in Fig. 2 at e, which forms a mud-cham ber.
It is of course understood that these fascines are made of any suitable size and length.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
1. A fascine comprising a suitably-closed housing adapted to receive a weight or load, in combination with an open fascine as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Afascine comprising' a triangular, closed structure Ato form a load-chamber, in combination with an opeirended and open-backed fascine secured to said load-chamber and forming a portion thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY F. KELLN ER.
