SHEET Prune.
Application filed May 11, 1923. Serial No. 638,280.
To all whom it may concern: F ig. 7 is a perspective view, showingon Be it known that I, ALBERT ALLEN MAR- a'somewhat smaller scale the construction 'rINnz, a citizen of the United States, IGSlClr shown in Fig. 6.
ing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans Referring first to Figs. 1 and 3 A repre- 5v and State of Louisiana, have invented cersents the wall, which is com osed of a series tain new and useful Improvements in Sheet of'outside units A and A and interior Piling; and I do hereby declare the iollowunits Aiallassembled as shown in detail in ing to be a full, clear, and exact description Fig. 3, in which the outside units A and A? of the invention, such as will enable others have reversely disposed grooves a, bounded 10 skilled in the art to which it appertains to on one side by the inwardly projecting make and use the same. shoulders a and on the other side by the My invention relates to improvements in ribs (0 which project inward slightly wooden sheet-piling, and it is intended to further than the shoulders a, so form provide a oheap,-durable and efiicient piling stops for the end of the center unit A to that will serve as revetments for levees and prevent the center unit A from engaging other embankments, and may also be used the adjacent center unit, as shown most in the construction of caissons, cotter-dams, clearly in Fig. These center units have in the foundations ofbuildings and for 0th ribs a which engage in the guid grooves er purposes where a continuous wall or a as the center piles are driven down he- 20 driven sheet-piling is desirable. tween the side piles, as shown.
My invention comprises primarily the Thus, it will be seen that when the parts construction of a wall of sheet-piling 0012- are assembled, there will be a clearance space sisting of three separate parallel layers of between the edge of one center pile A and sheet-piling interlocking, as will be hereinthe edge of the other adjacent pile, which 25 after described, each unit being preferably clearance space will do no harm in that part composed of a single piece of yellow pine of the wall projecting above the water, and or other suitable wood, planed or otherwise that pile below the water will speedily bemachined to standard construction, as will come filled up with water bearing sediment, be hereinafter more fully described. forming a substantially tight wall.
30 The wall as so constructed is suitably In the form of device shown in Figs. 6 and braced by heavy posts and stringers or 7, the construction is similar, except that braces, in the usual way. the spacing ribs a are omitted from the My invention will be, more fully under side piles A and A but the center pile bestood after reference to the accompanying ing of the same construction as before.
5 drawings, in which like parts are indicated This form of construction shownin Figs. by similar reference symbols throughout the 6 and 7 may be preferable under certain several views, and in which: cases, as for instance, where high walls are Fig. 1 represents the front elevation of. not required. The individual piles are the protecting wall constructed according to driven in the usual way, and may be held in r to my invention, as seen from the riverside; place by suitable stringers B and braces B and 0 and reinforced by the posts C, the whole be- Fig. 2 is a similar view as seen from the ing connected together by the bolts 1) and D. rear or land side; 1 It will be seen that I provide sheet-pil- Fig. 3 is a plan view on a larger scale. of ing structure, in which a wall is provided,
to a portion of the wall; in which the individual piles are made of Figs. 4: and 5 are detail views on a still single units, with the guide ribs integrallarger scale, showing two of the units in therewith, the parts being constructed in a building up the wall, parts being broken planer or other suitable machine. away p This construction has special advantages -96 Fig. 6 is a plan view of three of the units, over composite construction, where the ribs showing a slightly modified form of conor shoulders of the grooves are separate struction; and pieces secured in place, which are apt to come out of a-linement causing the parts to bind, with the result that there is diflioulty in driving the piles.
Moreover, by the construction shown in Figs. 1 to'3, there is more or less clearance at the joints, so that the units of the walls can have an opportunity to expand or corn tract, without causing the .Wall to buckle or bend out of shape.
The individual piles should preferably be made of hard pine, 'or other suitable wood,
a which will be durable when in use.
While I have describedthe invention in its preferred form, it will be obvious that various modifications might be nade in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which could be used without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not mean to limit my invention to such details, except as particularly pointed V out in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A wall of sheet piling comprising three parallel layers of vertically disposed interlocking units, each outer unit being provided with a guide groove on the inside near the edge thereof, with an inwardly projecting rib adjacent to said groove, and each central unit being provided with laterally projecting guide ribs near one edge thereof adapted to engage in said grooves in the outer units, said central unit having its opposite edge engaging respectively said ribs on the outer units, whereby the adjacent edges of said central units are separated by a small clearance space, substantially as described.
2. A; wall of sheetpiling comprising three parallel layers ofvertically disposed interlocking units, each outer unit being made of a single stick of timber provided with a guide groove on the. inside near the edge thereof, with an inwardly projecting rib in tcgral therewith and adjacent to said groove, and each central unit being also made of a single stick of timber provided with laterally projecting guide ribs integral therewith near one edge thereof adapted to engage in said grooves in the outer units, said central unit having its opposite edge engaging respectively said ribs on the outer units, whereby the adjacent edges of said central units are separated by a small clearance space, sustantially as described.
3. A wall of sheet piling comprising three parallel layers of vertically disposed interlocking units, each outer unit being made of a single stick of timber provided with a guide groove on the inside near the edge thereof, and parallel to said edge and each central unit being also made of a single stick of timber provided with laterally projecting guide ribs integral therewith near one edge thereof, parallel to said edge and adapted to engage in said grooves in the outer units, substantially as described.
