2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 EINAR TBOYE, OF CHRISTIANIA, NORWAY.
SHEET-FILING.
. T all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EINAR TROYE, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Christiania, in the Kingdom of Norway,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Piling; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it. appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of referencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I 1 My invention relates to steel sheet piling and more particularly to that kind of such piling in which the interlocking members on both edges of the web are symmetric and consist of a groove between two ribs.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a sheet piling of this class, the
interlocking members of which may be pos1-.
tively and rigidly interlocked against relative or angular movement after assemblage, and which may at will be interlocked at different angles or in different relative positions.
The interlocking connection being rigid the integral parts of the same may be given a very strong cross section without departing from the economy of the piling section, the moment of resistance of the piling as a whole being largely dependent on the great Accordmass of the interlocking portions. ing to this system there may, even when piling sections with straight webs are used,
- be provided piling combinations not only of great or varied moment of resistance but also of corner connections, and pillars of square or other sections without needing any auxiliary constructions and without any riveting.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating various preferred forms of my invention Figure 1 is an end view of three interlocked sheet piling sections, Fig. 1 is a detail view of two pile sections showing the intel-locking members connected in a manner the reverse of that shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 52 is an end view of a number of interlocked sections of a modified type. Fig. 3 is a detail of another type, Figs. 4 and 5 are corresponding end views illustrating my sheet piling sections interlocked by means of special auxiliary sections. Fig. 6 is a diagram of two pile sections and Figs. 7 and 8 illus- Specification of Letters Patent. 7

trate further modifications of the form of the interlocking portions.
InFig. 1 the piling section-l having a:
straight web portion 2 is provided at both edges of said web witl; symmetric interlocking members, each consisting of two ribs 3 and 4, each of which thinner inner portion or neck and a thicker outer portion or head. Said ribs or the outer parts of said ribs are of similar cross are provided with a.
section, and form between them a groove 5,
of the same or essentially the same cross section as said ribs, so that each rib may be inserted in the grooves, and insure a rigid interlock when assembled endwise with eitherof the substantially duplicate ribs 3 and 4 of the adjoining pilingsection. Fig. 1 shows the rib 4 in the groove 5, and Fig. 1
. shows the rib'3 in said groove.
In the special form of section shown in Figs. 1 and 1 the median axis of the groove 5 is placed at an angle of 45 to the axis of the ,web 2, thus enabling thev sections to be interlocked rigidly either along a straight axis as shown in full lines or at right angles as shown in dotted lines. As also shown in dotted lines there may eventuallybe arranged reinforcement ribs or beads 6 along 7 the outer sides of the rib necks to assistin taking up the strain on these necks owing to side pressure or the like pressure on the sections.
Fig. 2 illustrates a sheet piling composed of various sections according tomy invention. In the section-7 the interlocking ribs 3 and 4 are placed symmetrical to the straight web of the section, thus forming with the interlocked sections 1, 1 (accord-n ing to Fig. 1) having interlocking grooves 5, 5 at an angle of 45 to their respective webs, a rigid interlock at an angle of 135.
The section 8 has grooves 5 the median plans of which are parallel to but out of line is slightly arched. In Fig. 3 is illustratedthe interlocking piling section,-"tormed by doubling up a comparatively thin web portion so as to form ribs 11., 11 and a groove 12 of a form corresponding to that of the piling sections of the foregoing figures.
In Fig. 1 is shown a ma-nner in which the piling walls according to this invention may be interconnected by aid of auxiliary piling sections 12 with ribs 13 forming a rigid interlock with the corresponding effective anchorage of a piling wall, dam
or the like may be effected-or it may be used for cofferdams.
Fig. 6 is a diagram of two piling sections 15, 16 of U- or arched section with interlocking means according to my invention, forming in combination with auxiliary sections 17, 18 a piling wall reinforced by pillars or posts or a kind of cofferdam.
Figs. 7 and 8 show modified forms ofthe.
interlocking ribs especially adapted to withstand heavy longitudinal strains. In the form of ribs shown in Fig. 1 there will be a certain amount of wedge action between the sides of the rounded interlocking ribs when the piling is exposed'to heavy longitudinal strains but when the ribs are, given the square shape shown in Fig. 7 or the spade shape shown'in Fig. 8 the 1ongitudinal strain will be taken up by the straight interlocking faces 19 of the ribs.
It is a special feature in the piling according to my invention that .it'enables the form- .ing of closed rigid rectangular or square constructions without the use of rivetin 'or other auxiliary connecting means. his kind of piling is therefore also suitable for various building purposes, as roof constructions, stairs and the like.
It will be evident that my invention may be used in connection with piling section webs-of any convenient section, as straight, curved, U-shaped, Z-shaped or undulated sectionsthe shape of the web and the dimensions of the interlocking ribs being suitable for the special purposes for which the piling is intended. By using interlocking rlbs of a strong typethe resisting momentum of the piling may be correspondingly increased.
:It is also-evident that the cross sectional form of the rib heads is not limited to the cross sections shown in the'drawings as even triangular, oval and other sections of the rib heads may be used.
I claim; v 1. A sheet pile consisting of a'web portion having interlocking members compris ing two ribs of substantially the sameconsection said ribs and adjacent piles at an angle to one another.
\ 2. In sheet piling a section consisting of a web portion having on both edges symmetric interlocking members comprising two ribs, said ribs having outer thicker portions or heads and inner thinner portions or necks, said ribs forming between them a groove of the same or substantially the same cross section as each of said ribs or heads,
said groove being adapted to' form a rigid or substantially rigid interlock with either of the two interlocking ribs or heads in the adjoining piling section and'a reinforced portion on the outer side of the neck portion of one of said ribs and forming an abutment for the head of the other rib.
3. In sheet piling a section consisting of a web portion having on both edges symmetric interlocking members comprising two ribs, said ribs having outer thick portions or heads and inner thinner portions or necks, said ribs forming between them a groove of the same or substantially the same cross sec- I tion as each of said ribs 01 heads, said groove being adapted to form a rigid or substantially rigid interlock with either of the two interlocking ribs or heads in the adjoining piling section and a reinforced portion on the outer side of the neck portion on both of the said ribs forming abutments for either head.
4. In sheet'piling a-section consisting of a web portion having on both edges symmetric interlocking members comprising two ribs, said ribs having outer thicker portions or heads, and inner thinner portions or necks, said ribs forming between them a groove of the same or-substantially the same cross section as each of said ribs or heads, said groove interlock with either of the two interlocking ribs or heads in the adjoining piling grooves being formed by doubling up the edges of the web portion of the section. i 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses. I EINAR TROYE. Witnesses: M. W. KAHRS,
C. NORMAN.
