Be it known that I, JAMES T. SARGENT, residing at Ohio, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards, of which improvements the following is a specification.

The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in washboards'and has for its object the provision of a soap box or support which when in operative position will overhang the rubbing face so that V drippings therefrom will fiow down along the rubbing face, and can be folded into the brand board space pcrmitting the wash boards being compactly arranged for storage or transportation. The invention is herein-l after more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification Figure l is an elevation of the upper portion of a washboard having my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the soap box or support; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are views similar to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 respectively the soap box or support and parts of the washboard being formed of sheet metal.

In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the parts of the board such as the side bars 1, cross bar 2, head piece 3, brand board 4, and back board 5 are formed of wood in the usual or any suitable manner. The brand board has its lower end interlocking with the intermediate cross-piece 2, so that there will not be any material flow of water from the brand board space to the back of the rubbing-face, thus forming a closed brandboard recess or space. The rubbing face 6 is preferably formed of suitably corrugated or roughened zinc sheets. The outer face of the cross bar 2 is preferably curved so that water splashed against the brand board will flow down onto the rubbing face. The soap box or support which is preferably constructed .with a back 7 and supporting ledge 8 is so pivotally connected to the washboard that when in operative position the ledge 8 will so'overhang the rubbing face that drippings from the soap will flow through holes or slots 9 onto the rubbing face. The soap box or support is so pivoted to the wash board and so proportioned relative to the brand board space, that the box or support may be folded into such space, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the brand board 4 and head piece 3 are formed by suitably bending a sheet of metal which is preferably galvanized. As shown in Fig. 5 the upper end of the sheet forming the brand board is curled toward the front to form the head piece. The lower end of the sheet extends down over the front face of the cross bar, forming a continuous surface for the downward flow of water splashed onto the brand board. The soap box or support is formed by suitably bending a piece of sheet metal, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and is mounted on the wasl1- board in the manner described in connection with Figs. 1 and 2.

It is preferred that the soap box or support should be provided with trunnions 10 in line with the upper edge of the back piece and projecting into holes formed in the side bars 1 of the washboard, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 5 and 6. It is preferred that when in operative position the soap box should be supported or rest against the cross-bar.

I claim herein as my invention:

1. In a washboard provided with a closed brand-board space in combination with a soap support having drainage openings and so pivotally mounted on the washboard that the support may be shifted from operative position into the brand board space and when in operative position the drainage openings will discharge to the front of the washboard.

2. A washboard having in combination therewith a soap support consisting of a back piece and a supporting ledge and having drainage openings and provided with trunnions in line with the upper edge of the back piece and so mounted in the portions of the side-bars forming walls of the brand board space that when the support is in operative position the drainage openings will discharge onto the rubbing face.
