Description
D. I. GEORGE.
WASH-BOARD.
' Patented Feb.2'7,18'77.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEY N-PEYERS. PMDTD LTNOGRAPNER SHINGTON D c NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID I. GEORGE, OF WINONA, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,842, dated February 27, 1877; application filed To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID I. GEORGE, of Winona, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wash-Boards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this Specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my improved washboard, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section thereof; and Fig. 3 is a side edge view of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in wash-boards; and it consists in a single corrugated zinc plate inserted in the grooved side bars and top piece of the frame, and supported from below by being bent around an iron clamp-rod extending across the frame, which is thus effectively braced, whereby a very efiective and economical Washboard is produced, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the wooden frame of my improved wash-board, consisting of two sides, a, connected at their upper ends by a cross-piece, b,;below which, and between the side bars a, is secured, in any suitable manner, a flat wooden board, 0, having at its lower edge a raised flange, d, adapted to hold soap used in cleansing gar inents.
This flange is a simple strip of wood nailed to the lower edge of the board 0, and channeled at its ends to allow of the drainage of the soapreceptacle formed by the said board, strip d, and the raised edges of the sides a of the frame.
Board 0 is provided at its lower edge with a longitudinal groove, 6, adapted to receive the upper edge of a corrugated sheet-metal plate, B, the vertical edges of which are received in longitudinal ways f, formed in the inner faces of the sides a of frame A.
Plate B, above alluded to, will be made of July 15, 1876.
a single sheet of metal, preferably zinc, and will be regularly corrugated; and the depressions on one of its sides will form the raised surfaces on the other. It will be also of sulficient thickness to give it the necessary rigidity for resisting strain when in use. This plate will be secured in position as follows: lts lower edge will be bent over a suitable mandrel, so as to form a cylindrical tube, 9, when its free edge is soldered to its body, and a metallic rod, 0, having an enlarged head, It, is passed through registering-perforations 13 in sides a, and through the said tube 9. This being accomplished, a nut, j, is applied upon its screwthreaded projecting end, and set up, thus drawing the sides forcibly together and clamping the corrugated plate between them, which, by this means, is held against all displacement whatever.
The advantage of this construction is that, using but a single thickness of metal, I secure considerable saving in cost, both of material and labor; that the plate is held securely in position; and that the frame, being adequate- .ly braced, is capable of resisting any and all strains likely to occur without coming apart.
In practice the head of the clamp-bolt will be received in a countersunk washer, is, recessed into the side a, and the nut into a recess on the other rail or side of the frame, thus preventing undue wear of the said frame in the one case, and preventing garments from being caught upon and torn in the second case by the said nut.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a wash-board, the corrugated metallic plate B, formed of a single piece of sheet metal, and provided at its lower end with a tubular enlargement, g, substantially as specilied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID I. GEORGE.
