SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,156, dated October 11, 1904.

Be it known that I, CHARLES L. KINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uhrichsville, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makingapart of this specification, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the different parts of the board properly connected together. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line A A, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of one of the side members, taken on line B B, Fig. 2, showing sectional view of the upper head and showing the back face of the back plate and the back side of the rubbingboard. Fig. is a view showing a portion of one of the side members, illustrating one of the suspending-hooks attached thereto and showing the relative position of the splashboard, the back board, and rubbing-board. Fig. 5 is a view showing the bottom side of the lower bead. Fig. 6 is a view showing a portion of the rubbing-board and back plate and illustrating the back folded upon the rubbing-board, also showing a portion of one of the side members in proper relative position. Fig. 7 is a detached view of one of the suspending-hooks.

The present invention has relation to washboards; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the side members, which side members are formed of such a length that they will constitute the legs of the washboard proper.

To the top or upper ends of the side members 1 is attached the top 2, which top board is secured in any convenient and well-known manner.

The top or upper ends of the side members 1 are provided with the open slots 3, into Serial No. 198,551- ilio lilo dehl which slots the ends of the splash-plate 4 are inserted, this being illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4.

The side members 1 are provided with the apertures 5 and6, the aperture 5 being the upper one and the aperture 6 the lower one, said apertures having located between them the slots 7 which slots are for the purpose hereinafter described.

The back plate 8 is provided with the beads 9, which beads are formed by rolling or bending the metal of the back plate to form what might be termed a tube. Upon the front face of the back plate 8 is located the rubbing-board 10, which rubbingboard is formed of such a length that it can be bent around the beads 9 and the back board 8 formed of such a width that said back plate can be folded over the side edges of the rubbing-board and upon the forward face. of said rubbing-board substantially as illustrated in Fig. 6, by which arrangement the back plate and rubbing-board are securely connected together. a

In use the rubbing-board is to be formed of metal as well as the back plate, thereby dispensing with wood, and yet at the same time producing a rubbing-board that will have sufficient rigidity for the purpose intended. The ends of the beads 9 are located through the apertures 5 and 6, formed in the side members 1, and the side edges of the back plate and rubbing-board located in the slots 7.

For the purpose of securely connecting the back plate and rubbing-board to the side members 1 pins 11 are inserted in the ends of the tubes 9, said pins being formed of such asize that they will press the metal against the peripheries of the apertures 5 and 6, said pins being provided with flared or wedge-shaped heads 12, thereby providing a means for springing the tubes 9 and firmly seating the folded portions of the rubbing-board located around the heads 9 in firm contact with the peripheries of the apertures 5 and 6.

The side members are held in proper parallel position by means of suitable attachingnails 13, which are placed through the pins 11 and the rubbing-board and back plate, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2. The splashplate 4: is held in proper position by means of nails 1th or their equivalents. The splashboard 4 is extended upward and folded over the top of the top board 2, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2.

For the purpose of providing a means for suspending the washboard when not in use the ring 15 is provided, which ring is securely attached to the top 2 by means of the staples l6.

For the purpose of providing a means for supporting the washboard proper when placed in a tub the hooks 17 are provided, which hooks are pivotally attached to the inner faces of the side members 1 and are so located that they will engage the tops of the staves of the tub, this feature being desirable for the purpose of preventing the washboard from slipping forward upon the bottom of the tub when in use, and for the purpose of providing a means for bringing the hooks out of the way when in use they are pivotally connected, so

that they may be turned against the back of the back plate 8, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and for the purpose of preventing any end movementof the hooks their shanks are provided with the annular grooves 18, as illustrated in Fig. 7, and the staples 19 seated in the groove.

For the purpose of draining any water that may accumulate from time to time between the adjacent faces of the rubbing-board and back plate the lower tube is provided with apertures 20, which apertures are located through the metal, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a washboard the combination of side members provided with grooves or slots at their upper ends, apertures formed in the side members between their ends and spaced from each other, slots or openings communicating with the apertures, a back plate and a rubbing-board located upon said plate and the back plate folded over and upon the face of the rubbing-board at its sides, beads located at the top and bottom of the back plate and rubbing board, said beads bent or rolled from the rubbing-board and back plate respectively, and the beads located through the apertures intermediate the ends of the side members, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a washboard, the combination of side members, a back plate formed of metal and the rubbing-board seated against the back plate and the back plate folded over the side edges of the rubbing-board, beads located at the top and bottom of the rubbing-board, and the lower bead provided with outlet-apertures, said beads secured to the side members, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a washboard the combination of side members, said side members provided with grooves or slots at their upper ends, a splashplate located in the open grooves of the side members and secured to said side members, a rubbing-board provided with beads, apertures formed in the side members, slots located between the apertures and adapted to receive the side edges of the back board and plate and connecting-pins located in the ends of the beads adjacent the apertures, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
