Be it known that I, FRANK EVERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in tVashboards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevational "iew of my improved Washboard. Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3, Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the head.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in washboards, the object being to construct a head of sheet metalwhich is so bent as to give it considerable strength and at the same time form a soap-holder which will direct the water draining from the soap onto and over the face of the rubbingsurface, so that the drainings from the soap may be utilized instead of wasted, as would be the case if they fell behind the rubbingsurface.

With this object in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, A indicates the side rails, which are preferably grooved,-as usual, to receive the rubbing-surface and the backing therefor. This rubbing-surface is indicated at B and may consist of corrugated sheet metal backed by a backing C, or said rubbing-surface may be of other material.

D indicates a cross-strip arranged at the upper end of the groove, against which the rubbing-surface and its backing snugly fit. The front face of this strip D is provided with a groove d, as shown in Fig. 3.

The upper ends of the side rails A are rounded and slightly overhang in front, as shown.

E indicates a sheet-metal headpiece, which is provided with lateral wings e, designed to be secured to the rounded portions of the rail-heads, while the body portion of this metallic headpiece is curved forwardly between the rails and over the strip D, the lower end of the headpiece being provided with a flange e, which fits into the groove 01.

F indicates a rod or bar fitted in sockets in the inner faces of the rails A and located above the forward lower end of the headpiece and serving as a soap-support, at the same time permitting the water dripping from the soap to pass under the support and onto and over the rubbing-surface. It is obvious that this rod F may be made of wood instead of metal.

I am aware that minor changes in the arrangement, construction, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a washboard, the combination with side rails, a cross-piece and a rubbing-surface secured therebetween, of a metallic headpiece provided with a reduced body portion located between the said side rails below the front edges thereof, and also provided at its upper end with lateral wings extending over and secured to the top ends of the rails, the upper end of said headpiece constituting the top connecting-piece for the rails, the body portion of said headpiece being curved forwardly between the rails and secured to said cross-.piece to direct water onto the rubbingsurface, substantially as described.

2.
