Description

PATENTED JULY 2. 1907.
o. R. ROSWELL. DEVICE ADAPTED FOR CURING DEAFNESS.
APPLICATION FILED 116.30, 1906.
THE NORRIS PETERS 60 WASHING'H'MI, u. c.
CHARLES R. ROSWELL, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DEVICE ADAPTED FOR CURING- DEAFNESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2,1907.
Application filed August 30,1906. Serial No. 332,629.
To all whom' it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. ROSWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices Adapted for Curing Deafness; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
My invention relates to a device adapted to be used for treating deafness, and the device consists in means for conveying and sustaining a supply of a suitable medicament to the ear or ears defective in hearing, all substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front view of a human head with my device engaged thereon in using position, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device applied and ready for use, and enlarged as compared with Fig. 1.
The idea of the invention as thus shown is to provide means for medicating the car by means of a liquid or flowing medicament or preparation of any suitable kindaccording to the need of the ear and the difficulties to be overcome. I
I have, therefore, devised the mechanism herein shown for applying the remedy directly to the ear in suitable proportions and by a gradual process so that the inflowing liquid may be absorbed as it enters the ear and do the work for which it is intended. To these ends I employ a band or strap A, which may be of linen or of leather or of any suitable soft and flexible material which can be comfortably worn about the head and neck relatively as shown in Fig. 1 and secured in using position by means of a buckle a adapted to fasten the opposite end of the strap or by any equivalent means,
. such as tying the ends of the strap or strip together.
Upon this part I temporarily secure tubes B, one for each ear if both require treatment, and the said tubes are secured to strap A by small elastic bands C which hold the said tubes Where they may be placed to enable them to be conveniently moved or changed upon the strap to adjust them comfortably to the ear. The said tubes have lower right angled and narrowed tapered projections 12 with central orifices through which the liquid is permitted to escape into theear. These orifices are designed to be small so that at the most the liquid will drip slowly therefrom, and thus prevent overflowing or flooding the ear with the liquid as well as prolonging the medication thereby from the contents of the tube. Ordinarily each tube is supplied with a quantity SufllClOllt to last an hour or longer, and the article is worn during that period when it can be removed and be applied at another time, say as often as two or three times a day, or morning and evenings if that be found most convenient, and treatment is supposed to continue until a cure is effected and which will vary as to different cases according as the trouble may be more or less chronic and difficult to remedy. However, most cases yield to a continued treatment for a period of ten days or two Weeks. Obviously, the healing comes from the medicament and the device herein is simply a means for its application, but I have found that the slow and gradual application is desirable, and this device serves this purpose and makes the remedy available. The said tubes or receptacles B are preferably made of glass, but may be made of rubber or other material, and relatively are small as will appear, and they may be affixed upon the inside of band A as shown or the said band may be slitted or slotted to project the tapered end I) through to the inside if that be preferred. This will bring the body of the tubes or receptacles upon the outside of the band.
What I claim is A device for medicating ears comprising a headband, a substantially right angled receptacle for liquid provided with a tapered extremity adapted to enter the ear, and an elastic band slidably engaged over said head-band and adapted to adjustably and reinovably secure the receptacle upon the head-band.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES R. ROSWELL.
