To all 't0/wm t may conce/rn:
Be it knovvn that l, FRANK Swnnms, a subject of the King oit Great Britain, residing in the borough et Manhattan, city, county, and State ot New York, have invented an improvement in Bit Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment adapted to be applied to a bit, particularly for a bit used in mouthing, breaking, riding and driving horses, irrespective of the breed of the animal, and the purposes for which he is employed. The attachment comprising my present invention is adapted to be iitted over the divided central portion of a bit and serves the double purpose of preventing the bit in the use thereof from injnring the tongue of the horse, and also vfor keeping the horse from getting his tongue over the bit, and preventing him from running away. lin carrying out the invention the article is preferably made of rubber or some other equally pliable and resilient material, and is adapted to be fitted over the central divided portion oit the bit with amember extending Within the horses mouth and lying over his tongue, for the purposes hereinbefore indicated.
The construction of the bit attachmentv Will be hereinafter more particularly described in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a plan vievv of the attachment shovvn in extended position. y
Fig'Q is a side elevation of the saine, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective vievv illustrating the use of the attachment.
.as hereinbefore stated, the `attachment comprising my present invention is preferably made oi rubber, but as Will be understood, may be made of any suitable and equally yielding or resilient material. rlhis is so molded as to comprise a central cyllindrical portion 10 divided longitudinally and having extending' from one side Ithereof an enveloping apron 11. At the extremity of the apron there is a looped member 12. ln the apron adjacent the cylindrical section there is an opening 13, and the adjacent edge along which the cylindrical section is broken is preferably recessed as indicated at 111. rl`here is an open space betvveen the end of the enveloping apron proper and the loop 12 as indicated at 15.

application iiled May 2a, 1918. Serial No. 236,261.
the broken cylindrical section 10 is a tongue member 16 in Which in its upper surface adjacent the cylindrical section there is a transverse recess indicated at 17.
The parts of the divided bit are indicated in Fig. 3 at 18 and 19 respectively, and these are connected, as is customary in bits of this type, by the ring joint indicated at 20. 1n the use of the hereinbefore described bit attachment the broken cylindrical section is fitted over the central part of the members 18 and 19 of the bit so that the ring joint connecting the parts of the bit extend into and lie Within the opening 13, and bear against the recessed portion oi the edge of the cylindrical section indicated at 14. The
enveloping apron l1 is then passed around the cylindrical section 10 and the tongue 16 passed through the opening 15 so that the loop 12 lies Within the transverse recess l'i' With the parts in the position as shown in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In use as will novv be understood, the cylindrical section 10 With the apron enveloping the same, protects the horses tongue in the use of the bit, and the tongue 16 lying at the rear of the bit, and extending over the horses tongue, prevents the horse from raising his tongue sufficiently tar to pass it over the top of the bit. As will be readily understood, the bit attachment is maintained in position on the bit, that is, is prevented from sliding toward either side by the divided portion ot the bit extending through the opening 13 in the enveloping apron 11.
l( claim as my invention:
1. A bit attachment comprising a cylindrical portion adapted to surround the central portion of a bit. an enveloping apron extending from the cylindrical portion and means also associated with the cylindrical portion for maintaining the apron in position when surrounding the cylindrical portion.
2. A bit attachment comprising a cylindrical portion adapted to surround the central part of a bit, an envelopingapron extending from the cylindrical portion, means for preventing the horse from putting his tongue over the bit, and means associated With the last aforesaid means for maintaining the apron in position when enveloping the cylindrical portion.
cylindrical portion adapted to surround the portion, a loop'at the jeXtremity of the apron,
and means associated with the cylindrical t portion adapted to be engaged by the loop to maintain the said apron in position in en veloplng the cylindrical portion.
' 4. -A bit attachment comprising a divided cylindrical portion adapted to surround the 'i e central part of the bit, an enveloping apron Copies of thig patent my be obtained for extending from one side of the cylindrical portion, a loop at the extremity of the apron, and a tongue extending from the other side of the cylindrical portion and having in one surface thereof adjacent the cylindrical por tion a recess adapted to receive the said loop for maintaining the apron in position when enveloping the said cylindrical portion.
Signed by me .this 22nd day of May, 1918.
FRANK SWALES.
