Description
M. MAYER. METAL SIGN. APPLICATION IILED m s1.19oe.
PATENTBD JUNE 25, 1907.
MORITZ MAYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METAL SIGN.
Specification'of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed May 31, 12206. Serial No. 319,468.
To LLZZ whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, MORITZ MAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Metal Signs, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates to a metal sign of separable, collapsible or knock-down character and it also relates to a metal sign of this character adapted to be suspended, the act of suspending the sign performing the function of holding the parts together or in their connected relation.
In the device of my improvement I prefer to employ a structure of three metal parts, namely :a central part having bent over top and bottom edges which form slideways and side parts having reduced ends to slip into the slide ways of the central part and so form prolongations of said central part, and a sign of continuous continuity. These parts may be parallel sided or be given an outline representing some article to be advertised, therefore the relative proportions of the parts are not important. I prefer to pierce the upper edges of the side parts and so provide in each side part, two holes for suspending strings the effect of which when the sign is suspended, is to force the side parts into the central part and so hold the parts of the sign securely together.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating a sign made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the central part. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the left-hand part. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the right hand part. Fig. 5 is a cross section at the dotted line 01:, 90, Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 a cross section at the dotted line y, y,'Fig. 1, both in larger size.
(1 represents the central part and b, c, the side parts. These are preferably made of metal although I do not limit myself to the material of which they are formed. These parts, in the drawing, have the form or representation of a pen, particularly a fountain pen, but they may be given suitable outlines representing some other article to be advertised or any article desired, as the form bears no necessary relation to the structure. The part a is provided with bent over top and bottom edges 2, 3. These edges are bent over toward the same side of the sheet metal and they form slideways to receive ends of the side parts I), 0. These edges stifien said part and prevent it bending out of line and make of the part a a suitable support for the parts 5, c; b c are the reduced ends of the side parts I), 0, between the diameter of which and the full diameter of the side parts there are shoulders, and these reduced ends I) 0 fit into the slide ways of the respective ends of the central part a and they should fit as snugly as possible, so that there will be no lost motion or tendency of the parts to Wabble or change alinement.
I have shown and prefer to employ holes 4 in the side part b and holes 5 in the side part c. A loop of cord 6 is connected at its ends to the holes 4 and a loop of cord 7 is connected at its ends to the holes 5 and also a loop of cord 8 is connected at its ends to the loops of cord 6 and 7, and the sign as an entirety is suspended by the cord 8 preferably from a central point.
The function which is to be produced in the act of suspending the three parts forming the sign is to hold the side parts I), 0, into close and intimate relationship with the central part a, the holding movement tending to not only prevent the reduced ends of the side parts being accidentally withdrawn from the slide-ways of the central part, but to be held even more tightly to contact therewith. The cord suspending device may however, be varied in its particular form of fastening and for the purpose of suspending the sign, as modifications thereof may be employed to equal advantage without de arting from the spirit of my invention and t 1e same function be still efiected.
I have not in the drawings, indicated any advertising material upon the surface of the three parts forming the sign, as this as well as the shape of the three parts may be varied at pleasure according to the article to be advertised, my invention being broader than the form of the parts or the advertising matter to be put on the surface of the parts.
One of the essential advantages of the sign of my invention is that the parts are readily separable, so as to pack the same when complete for shipment from the place or factory where the sign is made to the place where it is to be put together and used as a sign, the fact that the parts are decorated and lettered being not the slightest disadvantage to the form of sign in connection with the parts or its packing in a knock down condition for transportation.
I claim as my invention:
1. A sign composed of suitable material comprising a plurality of separable parts which in their elongated continuity are necessary to construct the form of the article ad vertised, means for connecting the said parts in substantial alinement, and means for suspending the center by the end parts.
2. A sign composed of three parts of metal adapted to be placed in substantial alinement, the central part having bent over top andbottom edges forming slide ways on one surface thereof, and the end parts adapted to be received in the slide Ways at the opposite ends of the central part and means for suspending the sign by the side parts.
3. A sign composed of three parts of metal adapted to be placed in substantial alinement, the central part having bent over top and bottom edges forming slideways on one surface thereof, the side parts having reduced ends With shoulders and the reduced ends adapted to be received in the slide Ways of the central part up to the shoulders, said parts-having holes adjacent to said shoulders for cords by which both the side parts and central part are suspended.
4. A sign composed of three arts of suitable material adapted to be p aced in substantial alinement, the central part having bent over top and bottom edges forming slideWays on one surface thereof, the side parts having reduced ends With shoulders and the reduced ends adapted to be received in the slide Ways of the central part up to the shoulders, said side parts having holes in pairs in their upper edges and loops of cord secured thereto and by which the sign is suspended from the side parts.
Signed by me this 22d day of May, 1906.
MORITZ MAYER.
