Description

- Cct. 28, 1930. Y E. K. WOLFE BUILDING BLOCK Filed Jam 18, 1929 O O 0 9 O Q Q 0 mm m m INVENTOR Eve/eff 11 W0! 6 ATTORNEY- Patented Oct. 28, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EVERETT K. WOLFE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO-EDUCATIONAL CARD & CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK BUIL ING BLOCK This invention relates to building blocks, and more particularly to building blocks made from sheet material.
While building blocks of sheet material are common and well known in the art, such blocks have, heretofore, been equipped with auxiliary devices to enable the blocks to be fastenedto each other. Consequently, such blocks are not adapted for universal use, but are confined to the particular use for which they are especially constructed.
It is an object of this invention to provide a buildnig block of sheet material having means forming a part of the block itself, by which the block may be readily fastened to similar blocks.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a building block of rectangular shape and notched on all sides to enable the attaching of the block to a similar block in a plurality of diflerent positions.
These and other objects are attained by thenovel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and an application of the block.
Referring to Figure 1, the block is shown to comprise a rectangular sheet of material 5, such as cardboard, and provided with a pair of notches oneeach of its four sides, the notches being spaced from each other.
It will be seen that each notch has a verticaledge 6 and an inclined edge 7, and the notches are equally spaced on all sides of the block,so that the end notches of one block may be engaged with the side notches of another block.
In order to enable the use of the blocks for unusual angles the blocks are scored along the lines 8, 9, upon which lines the blocks may be bent for many purposes, such as to form a loop as shown in Figure 4:, or an end support as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
The blocks may have a letter printed on one side and an object suggestive of the letter printed on the other side, so that they i may be used for educational purposes as'well as for the amusement of children and others. For example, the letter E would appear on one side of the block, while the other side of the block may have the picture of an elephant printed thereon;
The blocks may be further used for the making of signs for advertising purposes, it being obvious that they may be of any desired size.
It is notedthat the blocks are of uniform shape, and consequently, may be distributed in packs in the manner of playing cards, no
auxiliary means being necessary to fasten the blocks together. i l
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which, obviously an embodiment may be constructed includingv many modifications without departingfro'm the general scope herein indicated and denoted inthe appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V g 7 An amusement and educational device, comprising a plurality of rectangular cards of the same size, each ofsaid cards having a pair of spaced notches on each of its four sides, each notch having an inclined edge and an edge perpendicular to the associated edge ofthe card, and each card having a figure impressed thereon.
