Description

nv14,-'1937- s'. D. COHEN 23026553 GREETING GARD I oiFiClg 7 femm ,ecirc l l Y Sol D. Cohen, vNew York,-N.:Y. assigner to Paper` sf'olaims. (cites-3mi lsimilar parts in the several views,` my novel greet- The invention relates to a ,greeting cardV and more particularly tothe type used for valentine 'g'reetingsjand has'forv its object to provide a 'gree'ting' card .of this character carrying'cone .or
' 5"A more animated figures. The device comprises a stripo'ffcardboard backing divided by a score line extending vertically throughout its widthwhere- `bythe two portions of the cardboard maybe Vfolded upon themselves, the backing having securedtheretoY a strip vof, paper carrying :af-design and` from which'I extend onel or more figuresV animated byffolding and unfoldingof the two. portions of the `cardboard backing. A more particl ular objectV ofzthis invention is to provide a construction of such greeting card in which the sujperimposed paper strip', carrying a design and the iiguresv to be'animated, is provided withcrease lines so disposed fas to induce a movement of the figures extending from the paper strip when the '20" cardboard is folded and unfolded. A still more particulariobject ofthe invention is to provide 'a device of Athe character described' in which of a plurality of figures one is bent forwardly of the fs'uperiiriposed"stripy and the othermovesl in a. i
jrplane substantially parallel to? thev backing strip,
andiip'on the folding together' ofthe -twoportions of the :backing strip, disappears vbehind the superimposed paper'stripl' Y A greeting card constructed in accordance with my invention is thus especially adapted for providing animated figures goingV through certain motions upon the unfolding of the two portions of the greeting card, such animated figures being entirely enclosed. within the peripheral edges of the card when the `latter is in closed position but extending beyond such peripheral edges, by the 'movement thereof induced by a novel system of creases producing an Vanimation in the figures,
upon the unfolding of the card to bring the two parts thereof into a position in which they are substantially in a plane. l
In the accompanying drawing, in which a particular embodiment of my invention is illustrated,
of the greeting card in fully open or unfolded condition.
Referring more particularly to the drawing,

in g card comprises two portions 5 and 6 loifcardboard formed from a single strip of material land adapted to be folded one lupon the other along 'a4 crease Yline 1 'extending throughout thewidth of thestripsubstantially intermediate the two ends thereof.
,Secured to the cardboard strip constituted of.
' the portions 5Y and 6, by `suitable adhesive, is an strip of paper 8 of much thinner gauge than the cardboard backing, such strip of paper, carryingjany desired design, for instance, in the particular embodiment illustrated, the representation of a stone wall, having its end portions 9! and VIIII secured to the cardboard backing. The
1Aright-ll'ande'dge Il ofthe portion 9 is preferably verticallygofthe superimposed paper strip to av pointl', the crease continuing from such point: `at a slight angle from the vertical so as to form 'thecrease line I6. From the point I5, consti-V f tutingthe juncture of crease lines ,I4 and I6, extend two additional crease lines I1 and I8 form 'ing acute angles with the crease line I6. A iigure I9, in the particular embodiment ofthe invention illustrated in the drawing, the figure of a boy, extends upwardly as a projecting portion integral with the superimposed paper strip.
The edge II of the panel 9 comprises a crease line which has an extension 20, which extension, however, is slightly at an angle to the vertical and is disposed in approximately the same direction as the crease line I6. From the point of juncture 2I of the crease lines II and 20Ytwo crease lines 22 and 23 extend upwardly and outwardly. A figure 24 constitutes an extension oi' the portions of the superimposed paper strip above the crease lines 22 and 23.
The crease lines I1 and IB are such that the: material on each side of such crease lines when` the two portions of the backing strip are being jez,102,553
brought toward each other in the operation of folding the greeting card, form a dihedral angle facing toward the backing sheet, whereas the; crease line I6 is such that the two strips of material on each side thereof form, when the card is being folded, a dihedral angle, facing away from the backing sheet. The surfaces between the two crease lines and the extending crease line cbnstltute a pair of triangles which form, when the card is partly unfolded, a dihedral angle facing toward the backing sheet in the case of one of the animated figures, and in the case of the other animated figure away from the backing sheet, the apicesof the triangles meeting at a common point, with the extending crease line constituting the edge of such dihedral angle, and extending, in such partly unfolded condition of the card, from the apices of the triangles toward the backing sheet in one of thefanimatedfigures, and away from vthe backing sheetin thefcase of the other animated figure. This construction pro-5 duces lan animation of the gure I9. such thatf c .stripupon the folding of the two portions of such as the two portions 5 and 6 of the greeting` card are being folded, one upon the other, thrgu I9 moves downwardly in Yavzplane substantially parallel to the plane of the greetingcardsoiasH to disappear behind the superimposed strip. The' construction, producing animationof the ligure 24, is such that as the two portions of the backing sheet are being folded, the figure 24 is moved rst forwardly ofthe superimposed paper strip and n score line 'I .approximately the same distance as the width of the panel I2 near the other end; of the superimp0sedstript- This spacing of the crease line I I from the score-line] 'spaces the large Y, Y A i d divided by ascore line extending vertically subvs'tantially intermediate the length ofthe cardpanel of the strip I3 fromv` the backing strip as the greeting card is being folded or unfolded so that the animated Figure 19 is accommodated in such space between, the cardboard backing and the superimposed strip when the two portions of the cardboard strip are folded.
Of course, it is obvious that only a single animated gure may be provided on the superimposed paper strip and that such figure may be either that represented by the gure I9 or that representedby the figure 24. Itis also obvious that the particular design imparted to the superimposed paper strip and the figures extending therefrom are merely illustrative. Specific changes may therefore be made either in the configuration of the several parts constituting my novel greeting c ard or in their disposition without departing from my invention.
