Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed March 15, 1906. Serial No. 306,165.
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FnnNcis H. AUDLEY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whips, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it a ppertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to whips and particularly to carriage whips, and the object thereof is to provide improved means for connecting the thong of a whip of this class with the stick or handle member.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol.- lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvements are desig nated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a connecting device which I employ; Fig. 2 a sectional side view of the adjoining portions of the thong of a carriage whip and the stick or handle member, said parts being in section and showing my improved method of connecting the same; Fig. 3 a side view thereof; Fig. 4 a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 3 and, Fig. 5 a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing a modification.
In the accompanying drawing Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are shown on a larger scale than Fig. 5, and in said drawing, I have shown at a the handle or stick portion of a carriage whip and at b the thong portion thereof, and said thong portion is provided at its larger end with a central tapered core member 5 around which is woven the usual covering 6 of leather or other suitable material.
In connecting the handle or stick member with the thong member, I provide the device 0 shown in Fig. 1 which is composed of sheet metal and consists of a central trans verse plate 0 circular in form, and provided at its opposite edges with oppositely directed fingers c which are preferably tapered as shown, and the plate 0 is also preferably provided with oppositely directed fingers c which, on the opposite sides of said plate extend in directions opposite to those of the fingers c and said fingers c are preferably cut or stamped from the material of the fingers c. In practice, the plate 0 is also inserted into or forced into the adjacentends I of the stick or handle member 0 and the adjacent end of the core I) of the thong b.
The pin d is also preferably provided around the central portion thereof and on that part which is inserted into the thong b with a core or project-ion d which prevents said pin from being drawn out of the plate 0 and out of the thong b if, by any reason, the stick or handle member a should become detached.
In practice, the connecting device 0 is secured in the thong member, and the stick or handle member a is then secured in position or forced into position in which operation the projecting end d of the pin d is forced into said stick or handle member, or this operation may be reversed and the fastening device 0 may be first connected with the stick or handle member and the end (1 of the pin (1 may then be forced into the thong Z) of the thong member. The thong b may be composed of whalebone or of any other suitable material and the pin (Z may consist of a double ended screw, if desired, or the stick or handle member and the thong member may be bored so as to receive the opposite ends of the pin (1. In practice, I also place on the opposite sides of the adjacent parts of the stick or handle and thong member and between the fingers c of the fastening device 0 reinforcing devices e composed of flexible material such as quills, whalebones or the like, which overlap the connection of the parts a and b, and after these members have been placed in position the said members a and b, the fingers c of the connecting device a and the reinforcing devices are securely wrapped with thread or wire as shown at In Fig. 5 I have shown a modification in which the connection of the parts a and b, after the reinforcing devices 6 have been placed in position, are first inclosed in afieXible sheathor casing g of leather, said sheath or casing being preferably formed by securely wrapping said parts with a strip 9 of leather, after which the coupling or connection so formed is securely wrapped with the wire or thread f. When the stick or handle member a and the thong member I) have been connected as shown and described, it will be im-" possible to separate said parts by any ordinary use of the whip and said whip will be as strong where the said members are connected as at any other point.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;-
1. A whip comprising a handle member and a thong member connected by a circular plate provided at its opposite side edges with reinforcing fingers which extend in opposite directions and overlap the adjacent ends of the handle member and thong member, said plate being also provided with a double ended pin which is passed centrally thereihrough and into the handle and thong memers.
2. A whip comprising a handle member and a thong member connected by a circular plate provided at its opposite side edges with reinforcing fingers which extend in opposite directions and overlap the adjacent ends of the handle member and thong member, said plate being also provided with a double ended pin which is passed centrally therethrough and into the handle and thong members, in combination with flexible reinforcing devices placed on and overlapping the adjacent ends of the handle member and thong member, said parts being all securely wrapped.
3. The herein described device for use in connecting the thong member and stick or handle member of a whip, said device comprising a circular plate provided at its opposite side edges with two fingers which project in opposite directions, one of said fingers at each side being cut from the material of the other and being shorter than said other finger, and said plate being also provided with a central hole for the reception of a double pointed pin.
4. A whip comprising a handle member and thong member connected by a circular plate provided at its opposite side edges with reinforcing fingers which extend in opposite directions, said plate being also provided with a double pointed pin which is passed centrally therethrough and into the handle and thong members, in combination with flexible reinforcing side members placed on the opposite sides of the connection of the handle and thong members, said parts being also securely wrapped with thread or wire.
5. A whip comprising handle and thong members connected by a transversely arranged circular plate placed between said parts and provided at its opposite side edges with reinforcing fingers which extend in opposite directions and which overlap the thong and handle members, a double pointed pin passed centrally through said plate, flexible reinforcing strips placed so as to overlap the connection between the thong and the stick or handle members, and a casing of flexible material inclosing all of said parts, all of said parts including said casing being securely wrapped with wire or thread.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 14th day of March 1906.
FRANCIS H. AUDLEY.
