specification of Letters Patent Patented @eine It?, 145233.
Application filed December .'80, 1911. serial Eo. 655,975.
To all Ywhom, it may concern.'
Be it known thatI, DANIEL EAM-.E MC- iils'ren, a citizen of the United States, residing at Surrey, in the county of lVard and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful, Improvements in lVire Fencing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri )f tion of the invention, such as will enab e others skilled in theyrt to which itappertains to make and use lthe same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire fencin.
n object of this invention is the prof vision of a fence wire having secured thereto a plurality of barbs which are mounted in such manner that they will prevent animals from passing between the wires without causing injury thereto.
Another object is the provision of an attachment. for fence wire which when applied will support thereon a pivoted barb.
A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character rendering t iem comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and ethcient in use and readily applied or detached.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction formations, combinations and arrangements of )arts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in thc accompanying drawing in which- Figure l is a plan view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the barb; and Fig. 4 1s a plan view of the blank from which the attachment is formed.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference the numeral 1 denotes a fence wire comprising a plurality of strands 2 which are twisted at intervals throughout their lengths as indicated by 3 and bent in substantially parallel relation to each other between the said twisted portions as indicated at 4.
My improved attachment 5 consists of a strip of an?,l suitable material such as sheet metal or t e like bent to form a pair of parallel sides 6 connected and held in spaced relation to each other b` transverse ends 7 and 8 the former of w ich is formed integrally with both of the sides 6 while the lat-ter is formed integrally with one side member and bent to engage the opposite side membeig'thus permitting the same to be stamped from a strip of material, thereby lessenin the cost, of manufacture. The sides 6 avc formed thereon adjacent. their opposite ends non-ductile inlrers 9 which may be bent to surround parallel positions /i of the strands Q. rThe medial ortions oi the sides 6 are connected by a. rivet or pin 10 upon which is rotatably mounted a double pointed barb 11. rThis barb is ot such size that the pointed terminals 12 are permitted to rest upon the ends 7 and 3 thus preventing the same from becoming' )ositioncd between sides 4 ot the wire and eing in an inoperative position and yet allowing them to be moved to a position which will render them harmless should any part of the body of an animal be forced thereagainst.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawing itwill bc manifest that a fence wire is pro vided for which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having` thus particularly described this invention what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a. fence liuc wire, a pair of lozenge-shaped members, end pieces formed integrally therewith holding said members in arallel spaced relation by the inbending o" said members upon said end iieees, fingers formed with said members ent about the line wire, a rigid member centrally of the lozengc-shaped members adapted to bind them in assembled position, a double pointed barb rotatably and vertically mounted on said rigid member adapted to prevent the passage of an animal between parallel line wires.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
D. EARLE MGALISTER.
