Be it known that I, CORYDON I. BUSH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Horse-Brushes, &c.; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

The principal object of the invention is, to secure a horse brush, or similar device to the hand, so as to prevent its accidental withdrawal from the back strap and also relieve the fatigue occasioned by the grasp of the hand, so that the hand may be at liberty and free to govern or change the position of the brush at will. Second, to increase or decrease the tension of the hand securing means.

The invention consists in the novel con struction and combination of parts, such aswill befirst fully described and then speciiically pointed out in the claims` In the drawings: Figure 1. is a view in perspective, of a horse brush, with the hand shown in dotted lines and in position beneath the back strap and the novel hand securing devices upon the brush and back strap. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 11'10 tleferring to the drawings, 5 indicates a horse brush, of the usual description, it being composed of a back 6, oblate in form, and the fibrous portion 7. Connected with the longitudinal edge portions of the back 6, of the brush, is a wide back strap 8, the strap extending in the line of an arc of a circle above the back 6, and beneath which the hand is extended in the use of the brush.

Upon the upper surfaceL of the back strap, at a point intermediate the ends of the back strap is the band holder, consisting of a curved' strip or plate 9, arranged edgewise in position, and which is in the Shape of a horse shoe, the curved portion being adjacent to the rear edge of the back strap and the ends of the plate extended forwardly to within a short distance ,of the forward'edge of said strap. Between the ends of plate 9 is connected rigidly a transverse base plate 10. Upon the forward edge of plate 10 are the flexible clasping oints or extensions 12, 12, which are bent ownwardly and extended upon the under surface of the back Strap'8. With the inner edge of plate 10, at a point equi-distant from the sides of the plate 9, is connected a pivot plate 14, which is narrow in width and extends a considerable distance inwardly in the direction of the curved portion of said plate 9. With the upper edge of said curved portion of plate 9 is rigidly connected a narrow strip or plate 15, which extends a short distance inwardly, and in'said plate is a horizontal slot 16.

Beneath the plate 15 is a detachable U shaped clamping plate for plate 9, oneportion 17 of which extends vertically in direction and adjacent to the rearedge portion of the strap 8, and the other portions 18 and 19 extend at right angles thereto, the portion 18 bearing upon the under Surface of the strap 8, and the other portion 19 bearing upon the under surface of the plate 15. In the portion 19 of the plate is a screw threaded opening 20. an adjusting clamping screw 21,` which extends through the opening 20, in the plate 15, and bears upon the upper'surface of the strap 8.

Having fully described my invention, what I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y

1. 4. A horse brush a back stra thereon, a hand retaining band connecte at one end with the back of the brush, and a band holding and taking up device, detachably connected with the back strap and with which the otherv end of the hand retaining band is connected.

5. In a brush attachment, the combination with the back of the brush, a back strap, a hand retaining band secured at one end to the back of the brush, a plate on the back strap, an arm pivotally connected at one end with said plate and having the other end pivotally connected with the free end of the hand retaining band, and securing means for the arm connected with the said plate.
