To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, THEODOR KUNDTZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, and JOSEPH REHOR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahogs. and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine-Bearing Cabinets and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in machine-bearing tables or cabinets, such,
for instance, as cabinets for sewing-machines and typewritin machines.
One object 0 this invention is not only to provide the table-top of the cabinet with a quadrangular opening extending vertically therethrough for accommodating the operation of the platform-forming vertically swinging leaf employed in carrying the sewingmachine-head or other machine or mechanism from above the table-top downwardly through the said opening into the cabinet and vice versa, and to provide the table-top with a quadrangular frame arranged above and extending around the said opening, but to provide improved means for guiding the chain or flexible connection employed in establishing operative connection between the said leaf and a cover-forming leaf which is hinged to the left-hand end of the aforesaid frame and arranged to close the opening in the frame in the downwardly swung position of the load-carrying leaf.
The primary object is to render the construction simple and convenient and avoid undue friction or strain upon the aforesaid chain or flexible connection during the movement ofthe load-carrying leaf.
With these objects in view, and to the end.
of realizing other advantages hereinafter appearmg, our inventlon consists 1n certain features of constructlon, and comblnations of parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of a cabinet embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a front view in vertical section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33, Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 4-4, Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 5 is a vertical section corresponding with Fig. 4, except that Fig. 5 illustrates the movement of the load-carrying leaf into its downwardly swung or depending position. Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertical section on line 66, Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.

The stationary portion of our improved cabinet comprises two side frames A which are arranged vertically and spaced laterally. The cabinet comprises a horizontally arranged table-top B which rests upon and is suitably secured to the side frames A. The table-top B is provided centrally with an opening 1) extending vertically therethrough. The opening I) is rectangular and arranged longitudinally of the table-top. The opening 1) is large enough in dimensions to accommodate the passage therethrough of a platform-forming load-carrying leaf G. A rectangular frame B rests upon the table-top A externally of and extends around the opening 1), and the said frame is glued or otherwise attached to the table-top. The frame D has an opening d which extends-vertically through the frame and is arranged in registry with. the opening I) in the table-top, but the rear portion of the said-frame projects a short distance forwardly of the rear wall of the opening I), as shown in Figs. 3 and6. The cabinet also comprises a stationary back E which extends between the side frames A and is arranged vertically below the rear portion of the table-top and next rearwardly of the opening Z).
G represents a hinged o1" pivotally supported load-carrying platform-forming rectangular wooden leaf which is arranged to swing in a vertical plane and engages the opening d of the frame D of the table-top or depends below the o ening b in the table-top according as the sai leaf 1s in the one or the other of its extreme positions. The openings b and d are large enough in dimensions to accommodate the location and operation of the leaf G which is large enough in dimensions to extend ap roximately from the rear wall to the forwarr wall and from side wall to side wall of the opening din the upwardly swung and horizontal position of the said leaf. The leaf G is preferably hingedor pivoted' at its sideedges in suitable proximity to the forward wall of the opening d, as at g, to the side walls of the said opening horizontally and longitudinally of the said. leaf to render the leaf capable of swinging downwardly from within the said opening or upwardly into the opening. The leaf G is designed to bear or carry thesewing-machinehead, typewriter or other machine or mech anism (not shown) and is therefore properly referred to in this specification as :the :load-.

Means for actuating the load-carrying leaf G are provided and comprise a oover forming leaf H which is hinged, as at h, tothe frame D of the table-top atthe left-ihand endof the said frame and consequently at the left-hand end of the openings 5 and d. The leaf His arranged with its axis at a right angle to the axis of the load-carrying leaf G and is employed in lifting the latter from its downwardly swung or depending :position into its horizontal and opening-closing position. That is, the leaf H covers the openings d and b, or projects laterally of the left-hand end of the frame D according as the load-carrying leaf G is in its depending position or in its upwardly swung and horizontal position. The cover-forming leaf H is operativelyconnected with the loadecarrying leaf G by a chain or flexible connection I which is attached at one end to the cover-forming leafa suitable distance from the :hingedend. of the said leaf and near the rear side-edge of the leaf and is suitably connected atits other end to the lower end of a bracket G which depends from and is rigidly secured to theloadcarrying leaf G centrallybetween the ends and at the rear or free longitudinal edge of the load-carrying leaf. The flexible connection I leads over a guide-roller K which is suitably supported from a forwardly and rearwardly swinging bracket L which depends from the top of the rear portion of the frame D centrally between theends of the rearwall of the opening (I in the said frame and .is supported in any approved manner, being preferably pivoted at its upper end, asat Z, horizontally and parallelly with the axis of the leaf G tola plate J which is suitably secured to the rear walls of the openings d and bandengages a recess D which (see Figs. land 6) is formed in the rear wall of the opening (Z to accommodate the location of the bracket L and its roller K, and the rear wall of the opening I) and the adjacent portion of the back E are cut away, as at 10, to conveniently accommodate the location of the said bracket and the bracket G of the load-carrying leaf in the horizontal and upwardly swung position of the said leaf. Preferably the flexible connection I is arranged to extend in and along a recess 12 with which the leaf H is provided a commodate the arrangement of the said flexible connection flush with the upper side of the said frame in the fully open and horizontal'pos'ition of the said leaf as shown in 1 and 2.
Means for limiting the upward movement of the load-carrying leaf G and preventing swinging of :thesaid leaf upwardly 1 beyond its plates 14 which are suitably secured to the said leaf at the free longitudinal edge .and spaced longitudinally of the leaf and so .ar-
ranged that when the said leaf is in its horizontal and opening-closing position they extend underor overlapiand abut against the under side of that portion of the frame D which projects forwardly of the rear wall of the opening-b, as shown in Figs. 1 and-3.
The guide-roller K projects forwardly of the bracket L and is preferably loosely mounted upon a correspondingly arranged axle m which is provided .at its outer end with .a head m which is countersunk in the forward end of the roller and prevents displacement of the roller forwardly from the said axle. The axle 'm projects somewhat beyond the rear side .of the bracket L where .it .is :reduced diametrically, and a collar m .(see Fig. 6) is mounted on the diametrically reduced rear end of the axle,.and theaxle is upset or JITV" eted, as at m at thevouter face of the collar to prevent displacement'of the collar rearwardly from the axle, and the collar obviously prevents-displacement ofthe axle .for wardly from the roller-bearing bracket.
The roller K is provided at its forward end (see Fig. 6) withanannular flange K which prevents displacement of the flexible connection I forwardly from OH the roller. Obviously the innerside of the roller-flange K has some pressurerexerted against it by the flexible-connection 'Iduring the movement of the load-carrying leaf :G into ill/S downwardly swung or depending position, and the forward side of the roller-bearing bracket has some pressure exerted against it during the actuation of the said leaf from :its depending .into its horizontal and opening-closing position.
.The capability of the roller-bearmg bracket to swingas required to yield 'toany pressure exerted as aforesaid by the flexible connection I against the inner side of the rollerflange or against the forward side of the bracket reduces the friction and strain .upon the said flexible connection to .a minimum during the movement of-the load-carrying leaf.
What we claim :is
1. In-atable or cabinet of the character in suitable distance from and. parallel with the l dicated, thecombination, with the stationary IOC portion of the cabinet, said portion comprising a table-top having an opening extending vertically therethrough, and a frame arranged above and extending around the said opening, said frame having the opening therein arranged in registry with the firstmentioned opening; a movable load-carrying platform-forming leaf arranged within the opening in the frame-or depending below the opening in the table-top according as the said leaf is in the one or the other of its extreme positions, which leaf is pivotally supported at the forward portion of the frame and arranged with its axis longitudinally of the cabinet, and a cover-forming leaf adapted to cover the said openings and hinged to and transversely of the left-hand end of the frameat a right angle to the axis of the loadcarrying leaf, of a plate secured to the tabletop at the rear of the aforesaid openings and extending upwardly into the said frame; a swinging bracket pivoted at its upper end to and arranged to swing forwardly from the plate; a guide-roller arranged at and projecting forwardly from the forward side of and borne by the bracket, said guide-roller being provided at its forward end with a circumferentially extending flange, and a flexible connection attached at one end to the coverforming leaf a suitable distance from the hinged end of the leaf, thence leading to and over the guide-roller between the flange and the bracket and operatively connected at its opposite end with-the load-carrying leaf.
2. In a table or cabinet of the character indicated, the combination, with the stationary portionof the table or cabinet, said portion comprising a table-top having an opening extending vertically therethrough, and a frame arranged above and extending around the said opening, said frame having the opening therein arranged in registry with the first mentioned opening; a movable platform-forming load-carrying leaf arranged within the opening in the frame or depending below the opening in the table-top according as the said leaf is in the one or the other of its extreme positions, which leaf is pivotally supported at the forward portion of the frame and arranged with its axis longitudinally of the cabinet, and a cover-forming leaf adapted to cover the said openings and hinged to and transverselyv of the left-hand end of the frame at a right angle to the axis of the load-carrying leaf, of a suitably supported forwardly and rearwardly swinging bracket arranged at the rear and centrally between the ends of the opening in the frame; a guide-roller arranged at and projecting forwardly from the forward side of and supported from the bracket, which roller is provided at its forward end with an annular flange, and a flexible connection attached at one end to the cover-forming leaf a suitable distance from the hinged end of the leaf,
thence leading to and over the roller between the flange and the bracket and operatively connected at its other end with the loadcarrying leaf.
3. In a table or cabinet of the character indicated, the combination, with the stationary portion of the table or cabinet; a hinged or pivotally supported load-carrying platformforming leaf adapted to swing in a vertical plane and arranged in a horizontal plane or in its downwardly swung or depending position according as the said leaf is at the one or the other extremity of its range of movement, and a suitably supported hingedcover-forming leaf arranged to cover the sweep of the load-carrying leaf in the depending position of the load-carrying leaf, of a suitably supported swinging bracket arranged externally of but in suitable proximity to the sweep of the free longitudinal edge of the load-carrying leaf and also arranged with its axis par allel with the axis of the load-carrying leaf; an axle supported from and projecting forwardly of the bracket; a guide-roller rotatably mounted on the axle and provided with a circumferentially extending flange, and a flexible connection between the load-carrying leaf and the cover-forming leaf, which connection leads over the roller between the' flange and the bracket.
4. In a table or cabinet of the character indicated, the combination, with the stationary portion of the table or cabinet; a'hinged or pivotally supported load-carrying platform-forming leaf adapted to swing in a vertical plane and arranged in a horizontal plane or in its downwardly swung or depending position according as the said leaf is at the one or the other extremity of its range of movement, and a suitably supported hinged coverforming leaf adapted to extend over the sweep of the load-carrying leaf in the depending position of the load-carrying leaf, of a suitably supported swinging bracket arranged externally of but in suitable proximity to the sweep of the free longitudinal edge of the load-carrying leaf and also arranged to swing toward or from the said sweep during the movements of the load-carrying leaf; a guideroller supported from the bracket and provided with a circumferentially extending flange, and a flexible connection attached at one end to the cover-forming leaf a suitable distance from the axis of the leaf, thence leading to and over the guide-roller between the flange and the adjacent side of the bracket, and operatively connected at its opposite end to the load-carrying leaf.
