CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed March 16,1907. Serial No. 362,626.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MEN'nnL L. GLASS, a citizen of the U ni'ted States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in (laps, of which the following is a specification.
.\.:fy invention relates to caps and has for its principal objects to provide for the separation of the cover from the frame so as to provide for washing the cover and for interchanging one cover with another," to provide for the reversal of the cover, and to secure other advantages hereinafter appearing.
The invention consists in the parts and in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cap embodying my invention, a portion thereof being shown in. section; Fig. 2 is an edge view partly in elevation and partly in section taken on the line 2---2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross-section through a modified construction of cover embodying my invention; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the clamp for holding the ends of the flexible ring together; Fig. 5 is a plan view partly in section of a cap embodying a modification of n'ry invention; and, Fig.
6 is an edge view partly in elevation and partly in section on the line 6-6 of Fig.
My cap comprises a flexible frame and a cover therefor. The frame com prises a band 1 preferably of a fabric that can be cleaned and a flexible ring 2 of greater diameter than the band. The band and the ring are connected together by flexible ties 3 which serve to keep them substantially concentric with out forming a rigid framework. In order to increase the flexibility of the ring, it is made of a thin resilient strip preferably of flat wire braid; and for the same reason, the ties are preferably made of strips of leather or cloth which are sewed flatwise to the band and to the ring.
The cover comprises a circular body portion 4 having an inturncd marginal portion 5 constituting an annular pocket. The periphery of this pocket is of substantially the same length as the periphery of the flexible ring 2 of the frame, so that, when said ring is inserted therein, it stretches or expands the cover to the desired shape and keeps the frame in proper position relative thereto.
In order to insert the expansion ring into the pocket, it is only necessary to contract the frame by bending or flexing it until it may be passed into the pocket. \Vhen the expansion ring is inside of the pocket, its resiliency causes it to resume its normal shape, thereby expanding the cover. Olwiously, in order to remove the cover from the frame, it is merely necessary to reverse this operation, that is to say, the frame is collapsed until it is small enough to be removed through the central hole.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 comprises two members A and B nch of which is a complete cover of the kind above described. Of these two covers, each comprises a main body portion and an inturncd flanged or marginal portion and they are joined together only at the margins of their inturned flanges. By this arrangement, each cover serves as a lining for the other and the device may be used with either cover exposed to view. This construction is advantageous when there is occasion to use caps of different colors, as one member A may be made of one color and the other member B may be made of a different color: 'lhc inside color B is concealed from view but it may be displayed by merely turning the device inside out. One great advantage of this construction is that the side intended for general use, that is the outer cover or member A may be made of any de sired fabric, wl'iereas the inner member or lining therefor B may be made of some waterproof fabric. In case of rain, the device may be turned inside out and used as a storm cap.
One of the principal advantages of my construction is that the fastening ties 3 provide an air space between the band and the margin of the cap. 'lhis advantage may be socured by other means of fastening the cover to the band, as for instance, by using an open-mesh fabric instead of the flexible strips. So, too, the inner margin of the cover may have inturned flaps 6 provided with fastening devices arranged to cooperate with fastening devices on the band. Suitable detachable fasteners for this purpose are the ordinary ball and socket fasteners or preferably button holes 7 in the flaps arranged to cooperate with buttons 8 provided therefor on the band.
As washable fabrics are liable to shrink, he expansion ring may be origin ally made of lightly less periphery than the inside peiphery of the pocket. Preferably, the ends of the wire braid constituting the ring are overlapped slightly and their overlapping portions are clampedby means of a thin sheet-metal piece 9 constituting a clamp. In case of shrinkage of the fabric of the cover, this clamping piece will permit the ends to be overlapped farther so as to make the expansion ring fit properly in the pocket. So, too, medallions and other ornaments to be attached to the cap are preferably'provided for by means of button holes 10 in the cover, which button holes will not interfere with the Washing thereof.
Obviously, the construction hereinbefore described admits of considerable modification without departing from my invention, and I do not wish to be restricted to the exact construction shown.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cap comprising a frame consisting of a band, a flexible expansion ring and flexible ties connecting them, a cover comprising a body portion and an inturned marginal portion arranged to constitute a pocket for said expansion ring.
2. A cap comprising a frame consisting of a band, a flexible extension ring of flat wire braid and supple ties connecting them, and a cover comprising a body portion and an inturned marginal portion arranged to constitute a pocket for said extension ring.
3. A cap comprising a frame consisting of a band, a flexible extension ring and flexible ties connecting them, and a cover comprising two members each having a body portion and an inturncd marginal portion arranged to constitute a pocket for said extension ring, the edges of said marginal portions being joined.
4. A cap comprising a frame, a reversible cover separably mounted thereon, said cover comprising two members each having a body portion and. an inturned marginal portion arranged to cooperate with said frame, one of said members being waterproof.
5. A cap comprising a frame consisting of a band, a flexible extension ring and supple ties connecting them, and a cover comprising a body portion and an inturned marginal portion arranged to constitute a pocket for said extension ring, said extension ring consisting of a wire braid and a clamping member adapted to clamp the ends thereof together.
6. A cap comprising a band, a flexible extension ring and supple ties connecting them, and a cover comprising a body portion and an inturned marginal portion arranged to constitute a pocket for said extension ring, said extension ring consisting of a wire braid and an adjustable clamping member adapted to clamp the ends thereof together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 9th day of March, 1907, at St. Louis, Missouri.
