TONGUE-*SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed March 28,1906. Serial N0. 308,562
To (0717/ whom/ it may concern- Be it known that I, FANNY D. LEEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inTongue-Scrapers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tongue scrapers and the several objects thereof are to construct a simple and effective device of that nature to provide the same with. a scraping area adjustable in point of extent to enable the device to be used in connection with tongues ct different sizes as well as to permit the operator to reach far back into the throat and scrape the tongue at its roots; and to provide a device which can be readily boiled or otherwise disinfected after each use.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described, specifically pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that slight changes may be made in the shape and material of the parts and in other minor details without departing from the scope of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved tongue scraper. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In said drawing, the device is shown as consisting of a single piece of thin flat steel spring wire 5 bent upon itself to provide a loop 6 having scraping edges, the ends being brought together and held in place by means of a metal ring 7 slidable thereon.
The device is made of flat wire in order that its edges may have a form that will produce a scraping effect on the tongue, and the end portions of the length of wire bent to form the loop are brought together to constitute the handle whereby the scraper is operated. The metal ring 7 is simplya narrow band that may be slipped up and down on the end portions of the wires to control the area of the loop in an obvious way. Either edge 8 of the loop may be used as the scraper.
It will be obvious that as the ring is moved along the wire ends in one direction or the other, the loop will be correspondingly increased or diminished, and that the loop be made small enough to permit the operator to reach far back into the throat and scrape the tongue near its roots. The device is also adapted for use where the throat is choked or stuit'ed as in diphtheria and like diseases.
The device can be inexpensively and easily made and can be readily boiled or otherwise disinfected after each use.
What is claimed is:
A tongue scraper comprising a single strip of flat spring-wire bent upon itself to form a scraping loop, and having its end portions brought together to form a handle, and a ring adapted to slide upon the and portions to control the size of the loop.
In testimony whereof, I aflix inysignature, in presence of two witnesses.
FANNY D. LEES.
