Description
W. K. LEAC-Hl ATOMIZING TUBE No. 85,596. Patented Jan. 5, 1869.

fitata' @steui asa @ftir WILLlAM K. LEACH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 85,596, dated Janna/r3 5, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATOMIZIN'G-TU'BES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To' all whom it may conce'm:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. LEACH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachu setts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Atomizing-Tubes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the drawing represents a sectional view of an atomizing-apparatus constructed according to my improvements.
My invention relates to an improved method of constructing what are commonly known as atoinizingtubes, in apparatus employed in drawing, up any medicated or other liquid from a suitable vessel, and diffusing the same in the air in the form of finely-divided spray or atoms. The pressure requisite to thus produce this spray is obtained either by the breath, (as when a simple form of the. apparatus is employed as a toiletarticle for atomiziug eologne-water,) or by a current of steam, as when ether is atomized to produce local anzesthesia.
The apparatus consists, ordinarily, of two glass tubes,
B, arranged at right angles, and having their proximate ends drawn to a small calibre, as shown.
These tubes are held in the proper relative position by a brace, 0, having thimbles or ferrules, l), for bolding the tubes.
Heretofore, glass was the material employed for such braces. This was objectionable from its fi'angibility. Metal was next attempted, but was abandoned on account of the diiiiculty of keeping the tubes in proper place, for, if the thimbles were such as to fit with the proper friction, the tubes could not be easily inserted, and, if loose enough to permit easy insertion,
the tubes soon became displaced. It is proper to remark here that the slightest displacement of the tubes as to partially obstruct the orifice of the other tube, as
shown, and to havethe two points at a certain proximity, as shown at e.
y method of constructing this apparatus is to 1m dent the tubes, as shown at b, and to cast a metal brace, (J D D, upon both tubes, while held in the proper relative position. I
A part of the metal of the, thimbles willfiow into the indentures of the tubes, as shown at a, and, after cooling, afford the means of retaining the tubes from displacement, as will be obvious.
I usually employ some softmetal, with a low fusiblepoint, as fusible metal, so called.
The indenturcs may be made by contracting the body of the tube with a circular indontm'e, or they may be made by abrading or corrngating the surface of the tubes at the point of attaclnnent of the brace, by means of a tile, or by any other means.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letors Patent, is
The method of constructing atomizing-tubes, by casting a metal brace, G D D, around indented tubes A B, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 20th day of November, 1868.
NM, K. LEAOH.
