Description

G. E. 6: O. A. MoINTOSH.
SKIRT MARKER; APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2 1913.
Patented Aug. 4, 191% UNIT STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CORA E. MoIN'lOSI-I, OFNEW YORK, AND OREN A. MCINTOSH, OF GREENE, NEW .YORK.
SKIRT-MARKER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ConA E. MoIN'rosH and OREN A. MoINTosrI, both citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of the city of New York, borough of li/Ianhattan, in the county and State of New York, and of Greene, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Skirt-Marker, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved skirt marker arranged to enable a woman to quickly, accurately and conveniently mark a line around a skirt approximately at the hip, to permit of laying out the length of a skirt the desired dis tance from the floor.
, In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a clamp for attachment to a table top or other support, a casing hinged on the clamp to swing sidewise, a springpressed drum journaled in the casing, and a chalk line winding and unwinding on the said drum and extending to the outside of the casing to permit of drawing the chalk line around the skirt at the hips to mark a line on the skirt.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the skirt marker as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the skirt marker; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
A clamp A of any approved construction is adapted to be fastened to a table top or other support 13 by the use of a clamping screw C or similar means. The casing D is connected by a hinge E with the clamp A to permit the casing D to swing sidewise free of the support B.
Within the casing D is arran ed a drum F pressed on by a spiral spring secured at its outer end to the drum F and attached at its inner end to a shaft H held on the casing and on which the drum F is mounted to rotate. On the drum F winds and unwinds a chalk line I extending with its outer end through a chalk line opening D formed in the peripheral face of the casing D. The outer terminal of the chalk line I is provided with a ring or other suitable handle I adapted to be taken hold of by the woman Specification. of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 2, 1913.
Patented Augu, 1914.
Serial No. 771,202.
on which the skirt is to be fitted, to permit the woman to draw out the chalk line I and around the skirt approximately at the hip to permit the woman to mark a chalk line around the skirt at the hip. It is understood that when the chalk line I is drawn out as described, the drum F is rotated and the spring G is wound up, and on the woman releasing the chalk line I the drum F is turned in the opposite direction by the action of the spring G to wind up the chalk line I. y
In order to cover the chalk line I with chalk or similar material such material J is filled into the casing D through a filling opening D normally closed by a cover K. It will be noticed that when the chalk line I is drawn out of the casing it is in contact with the loose chalk material J, and consequently the chalk line is chalked to permit of making a chalk line on the skirt as previously mentioned.
In practice, the woman whose skirt is to be marked dons the skirt and stands in front of the device, and then the woman takes hold of the handle I and places the same against the skirt at the hip, after which the woman turns around so that the chalk line I is drawn out of the casing and around the skirt at the hip thus marking a line around the skirt in a horizontal plane. \Vhen this has been done the woman releases the chalk line I so that the latter is again wound up on the drum F, as previously explained. The woman now removes the skirt and places the same on a table or other support, and then measures from the line on the skirt downward the desired distance and turns up the hem at this point of the skirt, which gives the correct length of the skirt and the desired distance above the floor. It is understood that the height of the support B corresponds approximately to the height of the hip of a woman from the floor, so that the chalk line mark produced on the skirt forms a starting line for obtaining the proper length of skirt.
The skirt marker shown and described is very simple in construction and can be readily used for marking a line on the skirt at the hips of the wearer without any assistance whatever from another person.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a skirt marker, the combination with a clamp adapted to be fastened to a support a predetermined distance above the floor of a room in which the support is located, a closed casing hinged on the outer end of the said clamp to swing sideWise clear of the clamp and its support, the casing having an opening at its periphery, a spring-operated drum journaled Within the said casing, and a chalk line Winding and unwinding on the said drum and extending through the said opening to the outside of the casing.
2. In a skirt marker, the combination the said casing, a chalk line Winding and unwinding on the said drum and extending through the said line opening, and loose chalk material in the said casing and filled into the casing through the said filling opening.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
