Description

PATENTED DEC. 12, 1905.
E. M. McGOLLUM.
DRESSMAKERS SKIRT SCALE AND GUIDE.
' APPLICATION FILED APR. 26.1905.
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed April 26, 1905. Serial No. 257,480.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH M. MoCoL- LUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dressmakers Skirt Scales and Guides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a dressmakers skirt scale and guide, and more particularly to a device adapted for use by dressmakers and fitters in measuring and adjusting the lower edge of a skirt so that it will hang the same distance from the floor all the way around.
Among the salient objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character referred to which is adjustable, neat and simple, and which can be readily disassembled and put up in a small package for shipment.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention with a portion of a skirt shown to illustrate the manner of using the device, and Fig.
end of said arm 4 and provided at its lower edge with a turned-up portion 7, forming a trough-like construction with a straight bottom member 7 8 designates a scale casing or frame vertically disposed and carried by an arm 9, secured to the standard 2, while 10 designates an inchscale mounted within said frame.
The straight or lowermost member 7" of the depending guide-frame 6 is extended, as at 11, so as to serve as a pointeror indicator. Thus when the arm 4, carryingthe guide-frame, is raised or lowered, the indicator 11 indicates upon the scale 10 just how far from the floor the guide-frame is.
The use and operation of the invention may be briefly stated as follows: The device is placed upon the floor at the side of the person to whom the skirt is to be fitted. The skirt is then dropped down over the device until the lower edge thereof rests in the troughlike portion of the guide-frame, as'at A, which of course has been adjusted to the desired height. The person standing erect then turns around slowly while the dressmaker or fitter marks or turns up the lower edge of the skirt and pins it in the manner indicated in Fig. 1. The skirt thus adjusted will hang with its lower edge the same distance from the floor all the way around.
While I have shown what I deem a preferred embodimentof the invention, itis obvious that modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not, therefore, limit the invention to the details of construction and arrangement here shown except in so far as such details are made the subject-matter of specific claims.
I claim 1. Adressmakers skirt scale and guide comprising a base member, a standard mounted thereupon, arms mounted upon said standard, one carrying a vertically-disposed scale, and the other a guide-frame, provided with an indicator for indicating the height of said frame from the floor, substantially as described.
2. A dressmakers skirt scale and guide comprising a base member, a standard mounted thereupon, an arm mounted upon said standard and provided with a vertically-disposed scale casing or holder, a scale mounted with in said casing, an arm adjustably mounted upon said standard, a guide-frame comprising a wire skeleton frame having a straight trough-like portion carried by said adjustable arm, and an indicator carried by said guideframe for indicating the height of said frame from the floor, substantially as described.
