DEVICE FOR FITTING AND TURNING LADIES SKIRTS AND COATS Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
.- Application filed July 13, 1907. Serial No. 383,639.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO Cnncro, a naturalized citizen of the United States, residing at 1526 South Twelfth street, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Fitting and Turning Ladies Skirts and Coats, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for fitting the bottom and-lower edge of womens skirts and has for its object to provide such a device as will be at once simple in construction and capable of quick and accurate work.
My invention will be best understood as described in connection with the drawin s forming part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of the device forming the subject matter of my invention, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same showing the vertical arm of the device broken away for convenience of illustration.
Referring to the reference letters of the drawings, A, denotes a platform upon which the person stands in being fitted, B, is the base of the latform and B is a central column by whlch the platform A, and base B, are united together.
In order to level the platform A, with accuracy, the base B, is provided with a number ofset-screws b, 1), etc. which are thread ed to the base at or near the periphery and rest upon the floor or other means upon which the device may conveniently rest.
About midway between the platform A, and base B, is a horizontally dis osed arm C, connected to a hub C by a suitable fitting and held thereto by a screw 0, the said arm forming-a means of support and adjustment for all of the upper parts of the devicethrough the medium of a vertical arm D. The arm D, is graduated throughout its upper length to form a gage or standard w ich as shown is preferably marked off in inches and fractions thereof. The lower part of the arm D, is widened out toform bearings D, D which enga e the arm C, and one of these bearings ass own in Fig. 2 is provided with a set-screw cl.
Guided upon the vertical arm D, is abracket E, provided with bearings E E one of which is provided withaset-screwe. The upper ortion of the bracket E, is first twisted and t en bent around in the form of a 100 to form a I suitable support for a guard F. T e guard F,
I over which the garment is drawn in the operation of fitting comprises a curved metal strip flanged at the top to impart to it strength and stiffness and notches at the bottom throughout its length as shown at f,f, etc. to provide for the insertion of pins or for other ten'iporary means of fastening the upturned portion or hem of the skirt in position while fitting or leveling the bottom of the garment.
The guard F, is connected centrally to the bracket E, by screws 0 and as an additional means of support is provided with braces 'F,
F, which are connected at one end to guard F, by screws f .f and at the other to the lower portion of the bracket E, by a nut).
In using the device the person upon whom the skirt or coat is about to be fitted takes a standing osition upon the platform A, and the arm D is moved to the right along the horizontal arm C, until the guard F, comes in contact with the inner side of the depending garment. The length of the skirt at a given point having been determined upon, the lower end of the guard F, is adjusted to this point and its position noted by the graduations on the vertical arm D. Beginning at the front of the skirt the fabric is turned inward and upward around the guard F, to form a hem which is secured by pins or stitches located at a point within the notches f, f, etc. of the guard, the guard having been released from the fabric and turned on the upright arm D, which forms its fulcrum is next brought to the rear of the garment which in practice is usually an inchor more longer than the front. This A difference if any is noted upon the graduated arm D, and the guard F, is again adjusted accordingly.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. A skirt fitter com )rising a platform, a base connected to the atform by a column and provided with love ing screws, a horizontal arm projecting outward from the'column,
an adj ustable gage mounted on said arm and a notched guard bracketed to and adjustable upon said gage, substantially as described.
2. A skirt fitter comprising a platform, an arm projecting therefrom, a gage guided upon said arm and adapted to be moved to and from the platform and a guard guided on said gage comprising a curved plate provided with a number of recesses, substantially as described.
horizontal arm projecting therefrom,
' and a notche g; erases a horizontal arm and providedwithagraduated a base scale, a bracket adjustably guided upon the 5 connected to and provided with means for vertical arm, and a guard fastened to said leveling the platform, a verticaiiy disposed bracket and having its lowermost portion arm guided u on the said horizontal arm, provided with a series of notches substanguard carried by-a bracket tialiy as specified.
which is adjustabiy secured to said vertical In testimony whereof I affix arm substantially as described. in presence of two witnesses.
4. A skirt fitter comprising a base pro- LORENZO O' 3L A skirt fitter comprising t piatform,
my signature g vided with leveling screws, a platform, a column interposed between the base and the 1 platform, a horizontal arm fulcruined to said column, a vertical arm guided upon said Witnesses:
