Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
AApplication filed February 14,1906. Serial No. 301,939.
and has for its object to provide a tool which although it may be used in a number of different ways, is chiefiy adapted for use in wiri ing fences.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved wire splicer in connection with the other elements of the tool.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner face of one ofthe j jaws. i Fig. 3 is altop plan view of a portion ofthe tool. i, j
While the novelty in iny invention resides j in the wire splicing elements thereof, l have deemed it advisable to describe all of the other features of the tool, asthey are illust trated in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, my invention j comprises a handle formed iii two sections :'i and 6 which are crossed adjacent their forward enils and are pivoted at this point as at 7. At their point of crossing, the members 5 I and 6 of thc handle are enlarged as at S and flattened and have their enlarged and -llattened portions seated in recesses fornicd in i thel said members at this point. The end oll one ol' the walls ol cach recess is provided with a knife edge as at which niay'bc ntil- 1 ized to cnt pieces of wire which are cngagid`l iii recesses l() iii thc said enlarged and ilattened portions of the handle section. 'lhe opposing faceedges of thc handle sections 5 and are provided with registering recesses ll and l2 respectivcljv which, when the haiii illes are moved to a closed position, will l'orni a wire splicer or a wire clamping iinpleniciit, as may be desired. The l'ace ol. thc handlel sec-tion 5 is recessed as at l as is also the opposing face ofthe section (i, thc said section (i j being provided iii its recessed portion with a leather punch 14. Adjacent iis inner end 5 This invention relates to wire working tools the said face of the member 6 is provided with a series of recesses 15 of graded size which may be used to determine the size of wire. The extreme inner end ofthe handle section 5 isin the form of a fixed jaw wrench 16. Y,
At its extreme forward end, the handle section 5 is provided with a hatcliet blade 17 and the member 6 is provided at the said end with a hammer head 1S and a nail extractor 19, all of'wliich may be of any desired construction. The opposing faces of the forward end portions of the handle sections and 6 are provided with a registering series of channels or grooves by means of which a staple may be rmly gripped for removal.
Each ofthe said opposing faces is provided with a groove 20 which is located intermedig ate the sides of the said eiid.- portions and which extend rearwardly from the forward edge thereof, and with grooves 21 which open through the front edge of the said por tions and which extend rearwardly therefrom in diverging planes and open through the side edges of the said portions of the handle sections. Extending transversely of the grooves 2() and 21 is a groove 22, the said groove being located adjacent thel front edge of the said portionsand being arranged to re'- ccivc the big-ht portion of the staple.-
IVhat is claimed is:
A device of the class ydescribed comprising a 'pair of crossed pivoted handles having headed ends and havingregistering grooves fornicdiii the opposing faces of their headed ends and opening throngli the forward endandA adjacent the sides of the said headedigol ends, said grooves being extended rearwardly in diverging planes and opening through the sides of said headed ends, the said opposing faces of the headed ends of the tool being pro-.. v vided with registering grooves extending longitiidiiially of the tool and opening through the headed end thereof and with transversely extending grooves which intersect the aforeincntioned grooves, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof, I atlx my signature, in presence ol' two witnesses.
