DOOR-SECURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed September 24, 1906. Serial No- 335,969.
To all whon t it Wtcty concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN R; HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forest Grove, in the county of I/Vashington and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of devices generally known as doorsecurers. Its object is principally to accomplish that end in a simple, quick and effective manner and it consists of certain structural features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a view showing the same as applied for practical use. Fig. 2 is avertical section taken through Fig. 1, with fillingin plate in extended or ineffective position, of which a suitable number may be employed to meet contingencies as well understood. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the invention showing more particularly the filling-in plate infolded or resting upon the securer proper, and the holding or securing dog.
In the disclosure of my invention, I employ a plate, preferably rectangular, witha suitable portion thereof in the direction of its length of a greater thickness than its remaining portion, thus forming a transverse shoulder or stop 2 thereon to limit the extent of its insertion when applied for use tothe door as will be readily seen presently. The thinner portion of said plate is equipped or armed with stout pointed pins or-teeth 3 to pence trate the door casing or jamb for its effective retention in place.
A right-angled dog, or retaining member proper, 4: is suitably pivoted or hung within a central longitudinal opening 5 in the plate 1, so as to bring its door engaging surface or face about in alinement with the shoulder or stop 2- engaging the door-casing or amb, when it is in its efl'ective position as clearly disclosed by Fig. 1. Said dog has in its inner or under side, near its forward or inner end, a notch or'slot 6 receiving a corresponding pin or bar 7 extending transversely of the opening 5 and secured to the plate 1, to provide for controlling the inward movement of said dog, as in effecting the engagement of the latter with the door.
A packing or filling-in plate or leaf 8 having also a longitudinal opening a, is pivoted or hinged at one end to the outer end of the plate 1 and adapted to be brought into op erationfor filling in space which may be found to exist between the door-edge and the opposite surface of the door-casing or jamb, in applying the securer for use, as will be readily understood. The filling-in plate or leaf 8 has an opening a therein to permit the passage therethrough of the projecting portion of the dog 4. Of course, anynumber of such filling-in plates or leaves may be employed as the contingencies of the case may call for.
i It is noted that in applying the device, the plate 1 is held by the hand, with its teeth or pins presented toward and in engagement with the d'oor-jamb or casing, and its stop or shoulder 2 resting against the outer corneredge thereof, the filling-in leaf or plate 8 or the required number thereof, having been infolded upon the plate 1, with its opening receiving the dog 4, to compensate additional space which may occur at this point as above noted, when the door may be closed, which act would force or drive the pins or teeth firmly into the door-casing or jamb. The dog 4 may now be turned forward upon its pivot, and be presented toward the door, its inner forward edge being forced into the opening, in the plate 1, and its notch 6 receiving the pin or bar 7, thusfcontrolling or limiting the movement of said dog in that direction, and provide, as is obvious, for re-' sist mg any pressure which may be directed against the outs1de of the door wlth the view of forcing it open.
Iclaim I A device of the character described, comprising two hinged-together plates, one having a portion adapted to be inserted between the door forward edge and its jamb and a portion standing outward therefrom, a rightangled dog having one arm pivoted at one end, within a slot in the outstanding portion of one of said plates, and having its other arm adapted to be presented against the door name to this specification in the presence of and its jamb and crosswise of their meeting two subscribing Witnesses.
edges said dog having a notch receiving a cross pin of said outstanding plate-portion as JOHN HALL it (the dog) is forced against the door and the Witnesses:
casing. GEo. C. CLARK,
In testimony whereof I have signed my J. L. VAN KIRK.
