My present invention has reference to improveinents in pocket or other Suitable cases for the placing therein of cigarettes, but which are also applicable to other uses, such as the carrying therein of surgical instruments, medicine vials, and similar articles.

The invention relates, more particularly, to a novel construction of pocket or other case provided with a supporting plate pivotally arranged upon the hinge-pin. or rod of the ease, said supporting plate being adapted to receive cigarettes, or similar articles, and means connected with the said supporting plate for retaining or holding the said cigarettes upon the said supporting plate.

The `principal object of this invention therefore is to produce a pocket or other case for the purposes above enumerated which shall be neat in appearance and Shall be of a simple, strong, and durableeonstruction, thus providing a case for more readily presenting thearticles therein for removal, by means of thc automatically operated sup-` porting plate which swings in anupward direction and above the front edge of the case when the same iS opened.

My present invention therefore consists in the novel cmisti'uetion of pocket or other case embodying the principles hereinabove nu-mtioned, and of a chanwter to be more iully'described in the following siwcilication.

This invention consists, furthermore, in

the several novel arrangements and combi-' nations of the various parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same,all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and then vfinally embodiedr in the clauses of the claims, which are appended lo this sppciication. i

The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which l Figure lis a plan ortop view of the pocket case in its closed position. or top view of the pocket case in its open position. the pocket case -in its closed position, said section being taken on line 3-3 in the said Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating the pocket case in its open position, the cover of the case being shown partly broken away.

Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character l indicates the com )lete case, which consists, essentially, of a body section 2 provided with a laterally and inwardly projecting flange 3, which extends around the three sides of the body section 2 from any ordinary form of spring-hinge 4, which pivotally connects with the said bodysection 2 a cover-section 5. This coversection 5 is also provided with 'a laterally and inwardly projecting flange 6, extending around three sides ofthe cover-Section 5 from the said spring-hinge 4.

For the purpose-of retaining or holding the Said body section 2 and the cover section 5 in their closed relation, there is provided a lock-plate 7 having a nose-piece or catch 8 which normally engages with the iiange 6 of the cover-'section 5 when the same is closed down upon the body-section 2. The said lock-plate 7 is held in its normally locking position by means of a i'lat-spring 9 which extends across the rear side of the said lock-plate 7; the ends of the said iiat spring i) extending beneath the laterally and inwardly projecting flange 3, and being held in their operative engagement with the said lock-plate 4v7 by means of apair of downwardly extending lugs l() upon the said latera'lly and inwardly projecting flange 3. ' As will vbe readily understood from an' inspection of the figuresof the drawings, when t e body section 2 and the cover section 5 are in their closed position, the flat-spring 22 is compressed, but when the cover-section .5 is released from its closed position, and assumes its open position, then the flat-spring 22 has a tendency to straighten out or' assume its normal tension, thereby pushing open the bottom of the body section 2, or against the cover section 5, as the case may be. This causes the supporting-plate 15 to be tipped or swung in an upward direction, so that its liront or open portion will project above the sides of the case 1, thereby presenting the cigarettes or other articles supported upon the said supporting plate 15 to the operator and for ready removal there-` from.

From the abovedescription it will be seen that a neat and simply constructed case provided with a supporting plate pivotally arranged therein, and adapted to be automatically swung or tipped above the sides of the case, when the same is o ened, has beenI produced, thus permittingt ic cigarettes 'or similar articles, to be readily and easily removed from the same.

I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a case, comprising a body-section and a coversection, pivotally connected by means l of a spring-hinge, a supporting plate pivotally connected with the said hinge, said supporting-plate being provided at its two sides and the rear with a wall or flange extending above and beneath the said supporting-plate to form pockets or receptacles for the reception 'of cigarettes or similar articles, means connected with the said supporting plate for swinging or tippin above the sides of t ie ease when the same is o ened, and means lupon said supportingpate adapted to retain the cigarettes o`r similar articles thereon, substantially as and for the purposes setforth.

2. As a ncwarticle of manufacture, a case, comprising, a'ody-scction and a cover-section, pivotally connected by means of a spring-hinge, laterally and inwardly projecting flanges on said body-section and said cover-section extending around three sides of the said body and cover sections from thc said spring-hinge, means for locking or hold- 4. ingsaid body and cover sections in their closed position, consisting of pairs of guide-lugs on said laterally and inwardly projecting fianges of said body and cover sections, a lock-plate provided with a nose or catch-piece adapted t'o slide between said guide-lugs, said nose or catch piece being adapted to engage withl the said laterally and inwardly projecting flange of the cover-section, a fin er-piece extending laterally from said lock-pfate through a hole or .opening in the said body-section, a flatv spring extending across the rear of said lockplate, said. fiat-spring being held in its normal operative relation by lugs on said laterally `and inwardly extending flange of the said body-section, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. i

6. As a new article of manufacture,l a case, i.

comprising a pair of hinged body-sections, means for locking the said body-sections in their closed relation, a supporting-plate pivotally connected with the hinge of the said body-sections by means of a tongue or lug, a spring-bearing in said tongue or lug, a flat spring in said spring-bearing, the ends of said flat-spring being adapted to extend above and below the said supporting-plato and to engage with the body-sections of the case, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. As a new 'article of manufacture, a case, comprising a pair of hinged body-sections, means for locking the said body-sections in their closed relation, a siipporting plate pivotally connected with the hinge of the said body-sections by means of a tongue or lug, a spring-bearing in said tongue or lug, a flat spring insaid spring-bearing, the ends of said flat-spring being adapted to extend above and below the said supporting plate and to engage with the body-sections of the case, and a wall or vliange extending around the sides and rear of said supporting plate, and above and beneath the same, and retaining-bars on each side of said supporting-plate pivotally connectedV to the said wall or flange and adapted to retain cigarettesor similar articles upon the said supporting plate, and springs connectedqwith said retaining-bars adapted to hold tli said retaining-bars in their nor-- mal operative relation to the saidsupportingplate, substantially as and 4for the purposes set forth .lfn testimony, that l claim the invention. set forth above .i have hereunto sot my hand this 4th day of April, 1906.
